Default iPad 2 vs. iPad 1

Hello. I am a student, planning to get an iPad 2 for productivity in school and for entertainment purposes.

However, it seems that the iPad 2 isn't officially coming here in the Philippines anytime soon, and I really want to get one to use in my Summer classes, the Pages, Numbers and Keynote apps look just enough for light and concise works. I am waiting for the official release here because it offers the iPad at a much lower price (around PHP 24K for the 16 GB wifi), unlike unofficial iPad sales in the Philippines which demand you to cough up a little over PHP 30K+ for the 16GB wifi in Greenhills or any retailer like that, and because my Dad wants to purchase the iPad through a 12-month credit card installment, which you can't do on most unofficial retailers. We're on a 25K budget on my graduation gift.

So I was thinking about getting the iPad 1 instead. The iPad 1 32GB Wifi version costs P25K (since the price drop), almost the same as the iPad 2 16 GB, and if I decide to do so, i will get that one. But I am kinda worried about getting the iPad 1 32GB and then receiving news that iPad 2 will launch here in the summer after all, which will feel like wasting my money.

So what do you think I should do? Should I go ahead with the iPad 1 or hold my breath for the iPad 2? Do you think iPad 2 will launch here in December, just like last year? Or could you suggest anything for me to do? Any cheap local retailers on the iPad 2 which accept credit cards? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hmm..I suggest a notebook (slim 12/13 inchers) instead of an iPad for productivity vs. an iPad.

I doubt though that the iPad 2 will officially arrive this summer

@Driftspeed, We're kinda focused on the iPads, 'cause I already have a notebook and my dad and I are looking into tablets right now. Anyway, I'm talking about just light productivity, just some short spontaeous typing and web browsing and reading pdfs off emails. Anyway, Thanks.

There's no idea on when the iPad will be available in Manila. Your safest bet is to get an iPad 2 in the US.
An iPad 1 is fine too, but make sure you get it at a really good price.

Personally, I'll go for the iPad 2. For an extra $100 the difference is astronomical.

If you need it now, go get the iPad - when you graduate and start working, that's when you can work on the iPad 2G (or if iPad 3G is out by then)

If its cheaper now and your goal is for productivity and the need is urgent and if you think the iPad will answer your need, get it. If you can live without it until the iPad 2G is available here, then I think old school note-taking should get you by till it arrives.

If you have someone in the US who can buy the ipad 2 for you then by all means get it but if you need it already this summer, then the Ipad 1 will suffice for the work you have just mentioned.

It would be nice if you could wait for the iPad 2 since you'll likely get it for the same price as the iPad 1 when it came out in December. However, given the insane supply shortage in other parts of the world, it's highly unlikely that the iPad 2 will be in the Philippines anytime soon - I'm guessing iPad 2 will be here in June or July at the earliest. If you can't get it through someone who's in the US within the month, then it looks like your more viable option is getting iPad 1 in the meantime and just sell it when iPad 2 comes out. Just take good care of it so it still has a high resale value. In any case, for your needs, the 1st gen iPad will suffice.

I was at Gilmore yesterday, saw iPad 1 Wifi Only 16GB selling for 19,200 and a 32GB at 23,200.

Came from PMC MoA a few hours ago, and prices for the same were 19,990 and 23,990.

Looks like there's been huge price cuts. Last time I checked prices in December, those 2 models were going for 23,990 and 28,990 at the same location.
