I'm sure there are lots of musicians in here... I'm one of you!!!

I play the keyboards (I have a KORG Trinity) and do band direction/musical arrangements...

I'm interested to expand my musical horizon by incorporating technology (which is one of the primary reasons why I got a PowerBook)... Any advice or tips from the pros here?

I'm looking at getting the DigiDesign Pro Tools LE Digi 002 or Digi 002 Rack for my band so we can digitally record and clean up our performances... any thoughts on this?

Hi there, good choice! I actually head Pro Tools sales in the Philippines :D

Seriously, the Digi002 is perfect for band recording because it has 8 inputs: 4 high-end quality mic preamps, where you can plug all your sound sources. And since Pro Tools is an industry-standard system, your recording might actually end up being used for an album, that can be mixed by the engineers in professional facilities.

We are actually having a Pro Tools LE seminar next wednesday, in cooperation with YNZAL. You should go there!

Digital music production is one of my main consideration for a "future" switch to mac, aside from graphics and DV. I've heard of pro tools before, but i havent gotten around to seeing it in action. Too bad, i'll be on travel again next week. Would've love to join the seminar.

Hey Vic.. I heard you're a respected musician.. any thoughts on Pro Tools? I understand you use MOTU/Digital Performer... any advice for a neophyte like me?

Digital Performer, Logic, etc. might be way too intimidating if you're just starting out. If you're really starting from scratch, I recommend Apple's Garage Band - it's user friendly enough to keep your focus on the music and not on the software. And the price is right :D

But if you do want to plunge into the more advanced applications, you might also want to ask kibs1111 about Logic. He swears by it the same way I swear by (and sometimes, swear at) Digital Performer.

As for Pro Tools - Ditoy is really the person to ask. It's more of an engineer's tool than a composer's tool.

Im using naman an Imac sa office sa makati. The one im referring to is the personal unit. Dont worry, I'll get there. Gonna immerse myself in digital music once I start travelling again. It's just to pass the boring nights in Mindanao away.

I think Vic is one of the expert here when it comes to digital music.

I feel that I've outgrown GarageBand already... I need something more sophisticated than that... Where our live multi-instrument performances can be recorded and edited..

Focus is on recording multi-tracks simultaneously and be able to clean up, overdub, and mix them...

Then I recommend Pro Tools and an Mbox. Paging Ditoy!

Oops sorry, if you're recording a band, the Mbox is underpowered for your needs.

What keyboard/synth are you using, Vic? Kurzweil? KORG? Roland??

vicicasas
05-20-2004, 08:24 PM
All of us guys here at Hit (kibs1111, myself, Rico Blanco, and a bunch of other guys) are heavily reliant on software synths and software samplers - we hardly ever use hardware synths any more.

I used to have racks and racks of MIDI modules and keyboards, but little by little I started mothballing them, until one day they were almost all gone except for a Roland JV-1080 and a Proteus 2/XR.

I use a Yamaha S80 controller keyboard, but my sounds come mostly from programs like Mach Five, Gigastudio, Reason, and softsynths from Native Intruments and Spectrasonics. I also use Apple Soundtrack a lot to help flesh out arrangements. Everything is virtual now; hardware synths are doomed!

Gosh... napag-iwanan na ako! How about if you play live, do you bring your Mac with you for your sounds library? Pano yun? I find myself stuck to the sounds of my KORG Trinity kasi and having REASON's library at my disposal during live performances would be a real treat! Can you enlighten me some more? :wound:

I assume he uses his powerbook to trigger all his software synths thru a MIDI controller - all different high-quality sounds coming from a 12" laptop, way portable than a couple of hardware keyboard synthesizers!

Hey sinch, if you can't go the seminar I can always do a Pro Tools demo for you, just drop by the office!

Hehehe i am not sure if any musicians from the list went! But the event was great over a hundred attended, puno yung place! We demoed Garageband, Soundtrack, and Pro Tools LE.

Keith Martin sequenced during Garageband doing an R&B tune, then also made a testimonial of the Mbox and showed his current unreleased works for Gary V., Karel, etc. He even sang live!

Thanks for all those who attended and to our sponsors Ynzal, Digidesign and Airborneaccess specially for giving me a gift 1-year free subscription! :D

alam mo naman na slave ako ng cakewalk 9 at sound forge (ok ok alam ko primitive ako ok!?) pero dun ako comfortable. any crossover programs for the mac na halos pareho din? i dont wanna relearn everything you taught me kasi nakakahilo! at panibagong gastos nanaman kasi yan!!!

what can you recommend? of course alam mo naman na meron na akong expanded XP 50 saka Trinity. i think i just need to get that big sampler you got in the studio para über tarush na ang sound samples.

Can I join? I was part of my High School's Transitus Choir (life of St. Francis) sometime back. Planned to join in college but was too busy. I am presently part of the International Choir in Doha, Qatar for the Catholic Church. I also plan to join the Choir and Music Ministry of Singles for Christ here in Doha. Several/other Church Choirs were also getting me to join them, but I respect my group so I declined. I just love it when we unite for a special holy event/celebration wherein 2 or more Choir groups join together to sing together. By the way, I sing as Bass.

The feeling is just different if you sing for Him.

Well, unfortunately, I forgot my piano lessons already - man, that was years back. The only instrument I know how to play now is my iPod. Hehe!

Questions for musicians..

Can the MacBook 2.0 aluminum run Main Stage? Or does the .4 difference in CPU matter? Apple is advertising that the old MBP is the MB 2.0 of today. Hence, we save $700..
