View Full Version : New iTunes version out?!
vicicasas 04-28-2004, 03:06 PM I have the current iTunes (4.2) and was browsing the iTunes Music store and came across this on the homepage.. (see attachment). However, clicking on the link takes you to a screen that says "Your version of iTunes cannot support the operation you requested. Please upgrade to the latest version and try again."
I downloaded the iTunes installer from Apple on a hunch, but it's still the 4.2 version. Also, clicking on the Foo Fighters anniversary free download graphic doesn't take you anywhere but to the album screen ... no mention of a free download.
Weird.
Yeah. Got me excited for nothing too.
Eto pa, leads nowhere din -
extremyks 04-28-2004, 03:31 PM Yap, I see also the 4.5, but no download link so far? Maybe it there is really an update the 4.5 ad appeared ahead... clicking Software Update to check if there is.
jsaure 04-28-2004, 03:34 PM They've added music videos and movie trailers in iTunes.
Portable video player in the works? Hmm :D
extremyks 04-28-2004, 03:34 PM Is the iMix thing new?
vicicasas 04-28-2004, 03:37 PM Look, kids ... WMA SUPPORT!
vicicasas 04-28-2004, 03:39 PM
super_ed 04-28-2004, 03:52 PM hmmm.. sound interesting
jsaure 04-28-2004, 03:53 PM The final nails on Real's coffin. Altogether now, 'Goodbye, RealPlayer!'
And thanks to the new Radio Charts, I found out the title of the song I couldn't get out of my head. 'Float On' by Modest Mouse.
winZu 04-28-2004, 04:11 PM We've seen a leak!!! Shyet! Meron nanaman mawawalan ng trabaho sa Apple! :D
EDIT:
Uhm, stand corrected (this is legit):

Not really a leak. More of an advanced notice. Seems to be iTunes's 1st year anniv today.
Jobs will be announcing something during a Conference Call today, whatever that is.
The new version will be released with the next 24 hours, I think. Keep clicking on that Software Update thing - or make sure the 'Update iTunes automatically' feature is enabled on your iTunes.
More details here. (http://www.macnn.com/news/24453)
mistermoya 04-28-2004, 04:22 PM I noticed that too a while ago! Why would they come out with a version 4.5 instead of version 4.3 which would make sense since the latest was 4.2? ;)
brain1976 04-28-2004, 04:29 PM It's 3:45pm and the page is still there. I'm surprised Apple hasn't pulled it out yet. If it's a joke, it's waaay past April 1.

Hope I'm wrong, but maybe its not a free update:o
Could only be available on the next iLife perhaps
winZu 04-28-2004, 04:32 PM Could this be a signal for another iPod firmware update? (WMA support)
Videos, videos, videos... will there be a Video iPod on the horizon?
Interesting! :D

Kelvin 04-28-2004, 04:51 PM 10.00MB
3:50PM and it's still not showing on Software Update.
So it's a direct download, not available via Software Update!
Kelvin 04-28-2004, 04:56 PM Just finished installation, no restart required.
Still compatible with Synergy! Woohoo!
Kelvin 04-28-2004, 04:59 PM New feature!
berniej 04-28-2004, 04:59 PM Darn! I'll be heading out of my office in a couple of minutes and I doubt if I'll be able to get it. I hope I can poach a connection at my wife's office to do the download later... :)
Obvious new features.
(I hope this won't be a repeat of the recent Airport 3.4 update debacle.)
super_ed 04-28-2004, 05:01 PM cant wait! downloading na! thanks mr. chairman! ;)
jsaure 04-28-2004, 05:02 PM Don't forget to download the free song, 'My Hero' by Foo Fighters.
brain1976 04-28-2004, 05:03 PM Oooh I agree. I'm excited. Almost finished downloading.
mistermoya 04-28-2004, 05:09 PM Damn am still in the office...am downloading the Windows version for my Wintel at the office :D
Oooh. This new, free Foo is cool. Makes me want to buy the rest of the album. But since this is obviously what they want me to feel, I shall resist as long as I can. :P
winZu 04-28-2004, 05:14 PM Guys! Load your Software Update!!! :D
and iPod Update as well!!!
W
CHAIRMAN ADEL, how'd you go about downloading the free Foo Fighters song? Do you have to be signed up w/ ITMS?
If the new iPod Update doesn't show up in your Software Update thing yet, get it directly here. (http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/)
7.5mb. One of the nice things about this is the support for Apple's Lossless encoder.
And yes, Arel, you need to have an iTMS account to get the free song.
EDIT: BTW, this update works for all iPods, even the mini.
[Edited on 4-28-2004 by Adel]
gbbles 04-28-2004, 05:28 PM If this update supports .wma, then I think an iPod update isn't far off.
edit: I guess I spoke too soon, as soon as I posted, Adel already announces the iPod update. Back to iTunes, I wonder if we'll have the Party Shuffle playlist option on the iPod as well, it's just what the doctor ordered! :D
[Edited on 4-28-2004 by gbbles]
iPod Update also a direct download! Software Update useless as of this moment.
Thank you, CHAIRMAN ADEL, for the info!
Updated it ... I'm being reckless again. I hope this isn't one of those screwy update packages.
CHAIRMAN ADEL, seeing how frenetic the downloading has been for the updates, if they eventually turn out to be duds, you definitely won't be alone! :)

Kelvin 04-28-2004, 05:47 PM I was kinda expecting one-click automatic album art updating through iTMS... sayang wala pa din...

Not there, apparently. Might have just missed it though.
brain1976 04-28-2004, 06:07 PM .wma support is only for the Windows version of iTunes and not for the mac.
Whaaaat?? First time I heard of a lack of support for the mac for an Apple developed software.
winZu 04-28-2004, 06:20 PM Question:
Is the Party Shuffle the feature that I'm thinking of? (you could re-arrange the upcoming songs from a shuffled configuration)
This is way WICKED - if it is!

this feature is only for the wintel brats! hehehehe
can't help it... :P
After installing both iTunes & iPod updates earlier, so far, so good! Haven't noticed any glitches (crosses fingers).
right_stuff 04-28-2004, 08:55 PM is there a way to update my ipod w/o using the restore function? need help hir... can't loose all my data in my ipod....
thanks...
bagwis 04-28-2004, 09:11 PM Don't press restore if you don't want to erase everything and bring your iPod back to factory settings. i believe you only have to press update and your ipod would be updated.
Jiru-chan 04-28-2004, 09:31 PM Galing! Can't believe WMA is already supported! :o *scurries away to download the new version*
'Update' is the right option indeed. It will keep all your songs in. In my screengrab above, the Update button is grayed out because I had just upgraded - otherwise it wouldn't be. Sorry for the confusion.
right_stuff 04-28-2004, 10:06 PM sir adel, i can't click on the update button... yet my ipod remains in ver 2.1 :(

Uh-oh.
Three reasons come to mind.
Probable:
1. Something's awry with your system. Do a Repair Disk Permissions, then try installing again. Or try fsck in single-user mode.
Possible:
2. Faulty download. Try getting it again and redoing the install.
Not likely, but worth checking:
3. The upgrade is uncompatible with your system. It could be that you downloaded an update meant for a diff. language, or your system has a different version not compatible with the default English version download.
bagwis 04-28-2004, 10:36 PM Does it say your iPod is up to date? If it does, you might have opened the 2.1 updater instead of the iPod updater which you downloaded. Check your utilities folder in your applications folder. Find iPod updater, then launch it.
peter_ob 04-28-2004, 10:50 PM I've been trying to update iTunes since this PM and all I get is this. From what I read everyone seems to have no download problem.

The WMA support is actually limited to automatic conversion of unprotected WMA files to AAC. And yes, only for Windows iTunes users. But I don't think they are allowing the WMA files to reside in the iPod or in iTunes in their native form.
Apple also is allowing purchased songs to be played on five computers, instead of the original three-computer limitation. On a downward note, Apple decreased the number of times you can burn the same playlist to CD using iTunes from 10 times to 7.
Pays to read the fine print.
peter_ob 04-28-2004, 11:19 PM In the download page it says turn on JavaScript. How do I do that?
peter_ob 04-28-2004, 11:37 PM How did I miss that? Been going back and forth Safari preferences and still missed it. Anyways, thanks a lot Adel.
extremyks 04-28-2004, 11:52 PM Also experienced it on Safari, then I use Opera and it quickly worked well... comes in handy in times like these... :P
superstarcrissie 04-29-2004, 12:09 AM i also have the same problem as right_stuff... thing is i don't think it's the program/updater... coz i tried it first with my 15GB ipod and it worked fine (this is the new batch of 15GBs)... so now that's up to date. but when i plugged in my 30GB ipod, the update button is disabled.. as seen in the picture attached :(
right_stuff 04-29-2004, 12:33 AM another bug? hellllppppp.....:(
iVinchy 04-29-2004, 05:52 AM having the same problem here... cant update my iPod
my iPod is mounted but i it says my iPod is not mounted and it also indicates that i have version 2.2 already but upon checking my iPod it still holds the 2.1 version. Now i cant sync my iPod....ggrrrrr, help!
btw, my iPod is formatted for windows... is this the cause of it all?
[Edited on 4-28-2004 by iVinchy]
winZu 04-29-2004, 08:12 AM Ladies, do a Permission repair first then restart the system (while iPod is not plugged in) and re-launch iPod updater. Hope this would do the trick. ;)

You should use the Windows version (http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/) of the iPod firmware update.
iVinchy 04-29-2004, 03:11 PM marvinp - thanks, i used to sync my iPod on a win pc but i recently switched to mac. im using an albook now and had no problems syncing my iPod.
well, doing repair permissions now...
thanks all
right_stuff 04-29-2004, 08:59 PM yeah!!! marvinp was right...
thanks marvinp and sir adel for the update...
iVinchy 04-30-2004, 05:35 AM still no luck with my iPod update, i already did disk permissions, downloaded the update on the web, restart, etc... but still the same?
oh and it always detect that no iPod is mounted, but it is.. weird
whats wrong or what have i missed??
my iPod is formatted to windows coz i previously use a pc to sync then switched to mac.
help help help
marvinp 04-30-2004, 12:08 PM Hi iVinchy,
Since your iPod is formatted for Windows, you cannot update it using the Mac firmware updater. You should use a PC to do that.
Another course of action is to backup the songs in your iPod to your PowerBook, and then use the Mac firmware updater to Restore your iPod, which converts it from Windows to Mac format. A downside to this is that you lose the ability to use your iPod on a Windows PC.
Hope this helps. ;-)
iVinchy 05-01-2004, 03:40 AM hi marvinp
apple released a fix on the iPod firmware update
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61937
i followed the instructions carefully, but to no avail...still no luck for me
marvinp 05-01-2004, 08:44 AM Hi iVinchy,
The workaround Apple suggested is only for Mac-formatted iPods. Like I said in a previous post, try to use a PC and the Windows version of the firmware update and see if that works.
right_stuff 05-01-2004, 08:57 AM yup, update is using windows... it did work fine with my ipod
....

hi marvinp
i think it was not stated that it applies only for mac formatted iPods only? anyway, i dont have a windows pc to do the update... i guess i have to stick with the restore options
thanks again
gbbles 05-01-2004, 01:36 PM I guess in this case you really have no choice iVinchy, nor did I. What I did was just choose the restore option and the iPod (Windows formatted) was updated, took a while though 'coz it synched back my whole library but once it was up and running, all was good. I still have my Windows setup for the 'pod hooked up, but these days, I only use it to charge.
I read somewhere that Apple is looking into this update bug though.
iVinchy 05-01-2004, 01:39 PM gbbles, i guess you are right... i have been wanting to press that restore button ever since i got the update. btw, did you back up your mp3s/songs before you restored the iPod?
dominiquejames 05-01-2004, 04:01 PM I just updated both my iPod and iTunes software. It has been a flawless update! Awesome! Thanks guys for the heads up! A question though regarding the free anniversary download--since the download is free, does it mean you guys can just as freely share it with us iPod and iTunes users?
softwarewolf 05-01-2004, 07:06 PM Hi, all.
I've had the same problem as some of you guys. My update button is not clickable. What's the solution for this kaya? First time it happened to me since I got my iPod. All the other updates were fine naman. I want to try the Lossless encoder. I read somehwere that the file size is much bigger than the regular formats we use like MP3 and AAC though. Is this true?
Thanks.

tdbur 05-01-2004, 09:30 PM Question about downloading from the iTunes music store... I've been trying to download the free songs.. but when i register via the sign up in iTunes.. it won't let me through unless I put in a US based credit card. (for some reason.. it thinks i'm in the USA can't change country or anything) I don't have a credit card... Is there a way around that?
vicicasas 05-01-2004, 10:12 PM After a little discussion between me, Eli (who have iTMS accounts), Carlo and Elbert (who don't), we've concluded seems the only time the No Credit Card option will pop up is if someone sends you a GC. If you try to sign up for an account from scratch, that option is unavailable.
