View Full Version : Major Airport Extreme Base Station problem (with PLDT DSL's PPPoE)
quasar 02-03-2009, 01:24 AM My AEBS-n has gone screwy on me.
Last night (is it past midnight already?), I was surprised to discover that I couldn't connect to the internet through my home wi-fi network. I checked the AEBS and saw that the status light turns from green to amber every few seconds. I called PLDT to see if there was any problem with the DSL service, and I was told there were no problems in my area. Since the indicator/status light for ADSL Line on the DSL modem was lit, the PLDT CSR suggested to connect the modem directly to a computer. Following his suggestion, I connected the modem directly to my iMac and found that I could connect to the internet.
I then tried to troubleshoot the problem with the AEBS. First, unplugged the AEBS for about 30 seconds then restarted it, but the problem persisted. Next, I ran Airport Utility and I was told that the my PPPoE password was incorrect. I was perplexed since I did not change any of the settings, and I'm certain no one else in my household fooled around with the iMac (the admin account is password protected).
I then decided to do a hard reset. I followed the instructions in set-up guide for doing a hard reset and keyed in the PPPoE password I got from PLDT. After a few seconds, the status light turned green and I was told by Airport Utility that I had successfully configured the AEBS. However, the Airport status icon in the menu bar did not display the Connect Time, which would be the case if I were connected to the internet via the AEBS. Curious, I clicked the Airport status icon and I was shocked to find that the AEBS was trying to connect via PPPoE, and failing. And all this time, the status light on the AEBS is green!
I still can't figure out what wrong with the AEBS. Any ideas?
(The AEBS is up-to-date with the latest firmware and I'm using the latest Airport Utility)
MacMax 02-03-2009, 05:55 AM Same with me here. Started 8pm last night. Tried connection through linksys WRT54G, no go! I only have one station connected to the net now! AEBS just a printer server for now!
MacMax 02-04-2009, 12:21 PM What could be wrong? The linksys finally got connected but not the AEBS! Wired the AEBS to the Linksys and connected via Ethernet. It works, but now I have 2 networks.
chrisjigaboo 02-04-2009, 08:26 PM SAME PROBLEM!! yesterday about 8am my internet got disconnected from my macbook and every time i try to update my AEBS i get errors. HELP PLEASE!
quasar 02-04-2009, 08:35 PM In my case, it's looking like a problem with PLDT. Are you guys on MyDSL as well? It just occurred to me that the problem might be confined to a specific area. I'm staying in Pasig City, near the Ortigas Center.
chrisjigaboo 02-04-2009, 08:36 PM please send me a PM if you can help. TIA.
chrisjigaboo 02-04-2009, 08:40 PM In my case, it's looking like a problem with PLDT. Are you guys on MyDSL as well? It just occurred to me that the problem might be confined to a specific area. I'm staying in Pasig City, near the Ortigas Center.
yeah im using myDSL. I'm staying in Las Piñas, Parañaque area.
- when i directly connected the modem to the desktop i got connected.
quasar 02-04-2009, 09:10 PM I got a suggestion from the Philmug mailing list to change from PPPoE to DHCP. However, when I do that, Airport Utility tells me that my "Apple wireless device does not have a valid IP address." I'm presently trying to figure out how to change to DHCP.
ro.gandeza 02-04-2009, 10:12 PM Same problem here. I live in Paranaque, What PLDT did is change my modem. The PLDT tech guy told me that they are currently phasing out the modem i had (its DSL-1 type). They replaced it with ZyXel P-600 series. With this new modem, DHCP is used; no more PPoE.
My Airport started giving me connection problems last weekend - lights kept blinking from amber to green. I plugged the ethernet cable directly to my Mac then changed to PPPoE (System Preferences - Network) - that worked! So the problem seems to be with my AEBS and not PLDT.
I did a reset of my Airport unit then transferred the Ethernet back. This time, the light was steady green (which according to the Help meant that Airport was On and Working Properly), but it still wouldn't connect. Worse, when I opened Airport Utilities, my Mac was scanning for nearby wireless devices but couldn't find any. Help please
Jiru-chan 02-05-2009, 08:53 AM Same problem. I live in Quezon City. I connected our Linksys (wired) router and it worked fine. I'd like to think that it's AEBS, but the number of people who experienced it within the same time frame is suspicious.
I'm still using the Nokia DSL modem that PLDT must have phased out years ago (signed up in 2001). Does PLDT ask for additional fees for a modem replacement?
I also encountered the same problem two days ago. I suddenly couldn't connect to the internet with my airport extreme. I connected my computer directly to the modem and was able to surf. I checked the status in airport utility and I'm getting error message regarding my PPOE password being wrong. I connected my airport express to the modem and now my network is fine. Will bring the extreme to a service center.
chrisjigaboo 02-05-2009, 12:32 PM any updates?
kalbs 02-05-2009, 01:12 PM same problem here. Tried AEBS and Airport Express but PPPoE server keeps" negotiating" ..
kalbs 02-05-2009, 01:16 PM called PLDT 172 but they said that they DON'T change anything on their system.
The CR agent keeps on insisting that the problem could be the router or its configuration.
My AEBS is OK since three days ago. I borrowed an Airport Express from a friend (known working unit with GLOBE DSL), but still same problem.
Any advise?
BTW, I am using PLDT PL-DSL1 modem provided by them.
Charlie 02-05-2009, 01:17 PM Same problem here , can't connect with both my time capsule and Airport express. I think its a problem with PLDT DSL.:confused:
When I connect using my MBP directly thru ethernet it works naman, the problem started yesterday morning.
kalbs 02-05-2009, 01:25 PM Any other PLDT DSL subscriber here that is using a different brand of wireless router aside from Apple? Just to check if it is just Apple router problem or not since Jiru-Chan can connect using wired router...... but weird?
I brought my airport extreme to istudio and as per their diagnosis, the extreme couldn't find an ip address. Left the unit for them to repair.
chrisjigaboo 02-05-2009, 03:29 PM I brought my airport extreme to istudio and as per their diagnosis, the extreme couldn't find an ip address. Left the unit for them to repair.
so there's something wrong with all the airport extremes?
Ejaxene 02-06-2009, 04:14 PM so there's something wrong with all the airport extremes?
I hope not.

Same thing! Airport status always says 'Negotiating PPPoE'
It's very suspicious that a lot of people experienced this problem one after the other. T.T
Did anyone find a cure already? Sir Charlie?
ro.gandeza 02-06-2009, 04:34 PM Same problem. I live in Quezon City. I connected our Linksys (wired) router and it worked fine. I'd like to think that it's AEBS, but the number of people who experienced it within the same time frame is suspicious.

They didn't charge me anything.
Ejaxene 02-06-2009, 04:52 PM This is really problematic. :))
loko__loko 02-06-2009, 07:04 PM pldt might did something to their system that renders apple extreme/express unusable...
rafaelc378 02-06-2009, 07:45 PM Is it just the Airport Extreme? I'm in QC using an Airborne Express Paid WIFI connection that's based on PLDT Broadband (according to Speedtest) and the connection's been acting flaky all afternoon. I asked the barista what brand their router is, and it's Linksys daw. Instead of the usual 1.6Mb/s sustained download speed, it's fluctuation from zero up/zero down to max 500Kb/s down.
chrisjigaboo 02-06-2009, 08:14 PM i want my wifi backkkk :((
EDIT: how come when i used my macbook as a router it was able to give out wifi... maybe there is something wrong with our AEBS :(
Ejaxene 02-07-2009, 12:42 AM I don't have an extra router... No wifi until this problem is solved.
I can connect via PPPoE though. Through the dialer
I think there's an issue with pldt and apple's n routers. As I mentioned earlier my airport extreme n suddenly couldn't connect to the internet. I connected one of my airport express to serve as my main base station while I brought my extreme for repair. I was able to make it work so I thought the problem was really my extreme. However, when I realized that transferring files to my apple tv was slow because the airport express I hooked up to be my main station was the old one I decided to use the new express (I have another one to extend my network) to be my main station. Now I got the same error message I got with my extreme.

I'm staying also near Ortigas Center.
MacMax 02-07-2009, 10:22 AM I'm in Marikina.
quasar 02-07-2009, 12:06 PM Update: a PLDT service tech came this morning to look at the problem. After checking the settings (even creating a new account), running a diagnostic program on the DSL modem, and replacing the DSL modem (even if nothing was wrong with the old one), the problem with the AEBS still persisted. He was surprised to see that the IP address assigned to the AEBS was 0.0.0.1. He said he'll see try to change the network settings to allow me connect directly without a username and password.
I also showed the tech this thread so he knows that this problem is more widespread.
Before the tech arrived, I downgraded the AEBS firmware to check if it was a problem with the firmware. The downgrading did not resolve the problem.
The problem is really with the PLDT network.
It's good you were able to get a technician to go to you. I called this morning and they said that according to their findings everything is fine at their end. Their only concern is up to the modem. I'm also getting the same ip address on my extreme which is 0.0.0.1. However I don't have any problems with the older express.

Did they acknowledge that the problem is at their end? Were they able to fix it already?
dubeditions 02-07-2009, 01:25 PM same what happend to my client... what we did, we got generic 4 way switch hub attached the AEBS and keyed the PPPOE username and password. boom! problem solved... weird
loko__loko 02-07-2009, 01:59 PM as of friday am, our aeb (dome type) attached to pldtdsl is working...
as of friday am, our aeb (dome type) attached to pldtdsl is working...
I think the only ones affected are the n routers(airport extreme or express)
v8designstudio 02-07-2009, 02:15 PM Airport extreme user in Subic Bay. No problems here in the studio, no problems at home as well. But i'm connected via cable, not PLDT.
Ejaxene 02-07-2009, 06:10 PM I'm also a myDSL subscriber. IP assigned for the AEBS is also 0.0.0.1
Maybe I should call those techs already
~~~
Edit:
So yeah, I just called and the CSR told me that they couldn't get someone to check my broadband because it's a router problem. My goodness.
She also said that the myDSL is preconfigured for a PC and a modem, so Mac users not welcome? Then she asked me a dreaded question, "Ano po bang Windows niyo ma'am? Apple or Mac?" I'm going nuts.
loko__loko 02-07-2009, 07:56 PM im wondering if there is any mac user working at pldt.. as far as they know, its a router problem...
p.pipster 02-07-2009, 08:07 PM Oh Gawd... I'm on Smart Bro and plan to switch to myDSL to get faster connections. I guess I'd have to stick with Smart Slo.
quasar 02-07-2009, 08:20 PM Update: The PLDT tech did not return or text me about the status of the repairs. This doesn't bode well for me. If this isn't resolved soon, I might just change ISPs. I'm tempted to try out SkyCable's cable broadband service.
Ejaxene 02-07-2009, 08:52 PM ^ I'm tempted to try out SkyBroadband but it's still not available in my area.
tinman 02-07-2009, 09:36 PM i don't think the problem is with the AEBS... something similar happened to me last september '08 - i get intermittent connection, my TC would always reset... initially i thought it was my TC but the problem persisted even after i switch to an old linksys router. pldt mydsl initially insisted that the problem was with my routers, but their tech guy eventually had to admitted that it was there problem... for two months, i had to endure their tech guy coming every couple of days without any improvement (fortunately, my neighbor's wifi has no password, so i could piggyback on his connection)... i just got tired and shifted to skybroadband.... no regrets so far!
chrisjigaboo 02-08-2009, 12:20 AM im thinking of switching to skybroadband too... someone will check my AEBS on monday ill update you guys...
Skint 02-08-2009, 12:55 AM Guys,
Questions,
Im a newbie on AEBS G version.
It say's on the box 54 Mbps is this from router to Pc and iMac desktop hook directly at the back of the AEBS ethernet port
And
The other one says in the box 11 Mbps WIFI from the AEBS to MAC Book and Laptop?
Kindly educate me regarding this?
Thanks in advance.
Charlie 02-08-2009, 03:23 AM Hi guys :)
I think the problem is with PLDT, I tried using 2 new different wireless routers today from linksys and belkin and still not working.
kaffee 02-08-2009, 05:00 AM I believe the problem is not strictly limited to the AEB's and other models. On Feb 4-5, PLDT DSL over at our work area was totally down (Commonwealth), but was reportedly fine in others (Feb 5, specifically) when I checked with friends in the Metro: Ortigas, Marikina (PLDT and SmartBro: slow), The Fort (PLDT, slow), Quezon Ave. area (PLDT, slow). I texted a fellow MUGger down south and was told that his connection seemed generally OK (not PLDT).
At the same time, my home connection on SmartBro was slow and intermittent (Linksys--> same PPoE problem as those in previous posts, by the way). It still is as I post this.
The PLDT connection is fine now after many (read: around 7-8) calls. The old XyTel modem was assumed by PLDT CSR to be the problem in most of their replies (router is a D-Link).
Of those who answered Customer Service on Feb 6, only one, a male CSR, seemed to know what was wrong right away: a reset Username by PLDT. He gave a username/PW combi and there was the connection almost instantaneously. Means that the PLDT-issued modem was working after all. And we were, seriously, shopping for another ISP.
No clear answer as to why they were purportedly resetting subscribers' usernames without notifying the subscribers. It was totally beyond us. Also, why it seems that [it now appears to have happened] in different areas almost simultaneously feels like ours was not an isolated case.
For those still with intermittent or dead connections, I suggest asking the CSRs about the username/pw resetting. There may be other reasons for your buggy 'net experiences, but it won't hurt to ask. IMO, though, there definitely was something wrong with PLDT on those days that it wasn't telling the public much.
Anyhow, this is all I can share and I hope this helps.
loko__loko 02-08-2009, 11:31 AM our office has a unique problem... almost everday around 430 to 6pm, we cannot browse the internet, no email, but all internet messengers and chats (including torrent) works. even after turning off/on the router and modem. sometimes after resetting, we get NO connections at all. the internet browsing comes back on different time after 6 to 8pm (pldtdsl bizplan)
MacMax 02-08-2009, 01:55 PM Pldt did something with settings. I can now login even without the @pldt end of the username. Just for the linksysy WRT54G though, I still can't connect using AEBS to modem wiring. I can only connect the AEBS to the internet by wiring it to the WRT54G(ethernet ;DCHP). I get stronger wifi signals from the AEBS.
Ejaxene 02-08-2009, 08:21 PM I'm near Commonwealth... Maybe, my area is also covered by the "problem."
Just an update, our telephone line does not have a dial tone. Internet problem then the line itself. Argh. What a nightmare. But I still can use the internet, modem>MBP.
I'm going to try using the AEBS again. Haay.
ibook300bb 02-09-2009, 02:40 PM I went to my friend who is also using PLDT and Airport Extreme that lost connection via router but working when connected to the computer directly via PPPoE connection.
I "tweek" the modem setting. I set the modem to dial instead of the computer, and now it's working. They are using ZyXel P-600 DSL modem btw.
loko__loko 02-09-2009, 03:05 PM ibook.. if you can elaborate some more so it will be helpful to the community. thanks
ibook300bb 02-09-2009, 03:52 PM I went to the modem configuration page. Change the WAN Internet Connection from Bridge to Routing. Input the PPPoE username and password. Change LAN DHCP setup from None to Server.
Turn on also the NAT (SUA only).
On the Airport Extreme, just follow the Setup assistant...
For more info go to pinoydsl.net
MacMax 02-09-2009, 07:56 PM Thanks ibook, "tweeked" the old PLdsl2 modem and was able to connect the AEBS (via ethernet).
pelican 02-09-2009, 09:16 PM Where is the modem configuration? Would the new small P-600 work in this workaround? I don't have a WiFi connection too for one week now. I'm using the Airport Extreme Base Station N also. In the meantime, I'm using my old Airport Extreme Cone White to connect wirelessly, but connection is slow compared to the N version.
Could anyone post the exact site of the workaround?
Or post the complete guided steps? Thanks.
pelican 02-09-2009, 10:06 PM Thanks ibook300bb. Will do it this weekend.
quasar 02-09-2009, 11:24 PM ibook...I followed the instructions from pinoydsl.net and got a constant green light on the AEBS. However, I wasn't to open/load any webpage. I rechecked what I did, then I realize I didn't input my PPPoE username and password as you stated in your post above. Where does this step come in?
Ejaxene 02-09-2009, 11:29 PM Do we need to try this on a Windows machine?
Or can we do this on a Mac?
Tsk, I have a different modem. I have the Alcatel Home PlusPlus 500.
ibook300bb 02-10-2009, 11:20 AM Change your Encapsulation setting to PPPoE under Network> WAN settings.
Change Mode first to Routing.
I used Mac to change the modem config.
Buddhaboy 02-10-2009, 06:35 PM I followed ibook300bb's instructions and I'm happy to report that my connection has been rock solid in the 30 minutes since I made the changes.
I just made sure to:
a. tell the modem to obtain an IP address automatically
b. allow the modem to choose it's own DNS server. It just would not work with OPENDNS, no matter how many times I tried
quasar 02-10-2009, 10:12 PM Finally! I got the AEBS to work. Thank you, ibook300bb!
loko__loko 02-10-2009, 10:27 PM Q, can you post step by step instructions?
Thanks
Ejaxene 02-10-2009, 10:40 PM Can't access my modem page, because I don't know how the MBP can obtain an IP address automatically from the modem
Charlie 02-10-2009, 11:45 PM Guys , how can I access the modem configuration page? tried typing 192.168.1.1 but nothing happens and I get timed out.
Thanks :)
quasar 02-10-2009, 11:57 PM @loko_loko: I'll try.
First, make sure the Mac is connected to the DSL modem via Ethernet. The following steps are for the Zyxel P-600 modem.
A. Creating a new service. As a precautionary measure, I created a new service rather than modify either my built-in Ethernet or PLDT MyDSL settings.
1. On the Mac, go to System Preferences>Network
2. Click the plus (+) sign under the network connection services list to create a new service. A dialogue box will appear.
3. For interface, choose Ethernet. Create your own service name to distinguish it from other Ethernet-based connections.
4. In the Configure menu for the new service, choose Manually. Enter the following addresses (taken from pinoydsl.net):
IP Address: 192.168.1.33
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.1
5. Click Apply. The new service will now be connected, or active.
B. Modifying the modem settings
1. Launch your browser, then type in the address 192.168.1.1
2. The browser will open into the modem's configuration page.
3. You'll be prompted for a password. The default in 1234.
4. After that, you'll be asked what method you want to use to update settings. Choose Advanced.
5. Go to Network>WAN>Internet Connection, change the Mode to Routing, then the Encapsulation to PPPoE. Dialogue boxes will appear for your ISP username and password. Enter them, then click Apply.
6. Go to Network>LAN>DHCP Setup. Change DHCP from None to Server. Click Apply.
7. Go to Network>NAT>General. Check Active Network Address Translation. Make sure the button for SUA Only is chosen. Click Apply.
C. Configuring Airport
1. Disconnect the Mac from the modem, then connect the AEBS to modem (using the AEBS's WAN port).
2. Launch Airport Utility. Use Manual Setup.
3. Click the Internet icon.
4. Under Connect Using, choose Ethernet.
5. Under Configure IPv4, choose Using DHCP. The modem's address (192.168.1.1) should appear as the Router Address. The IP address for the AEBS will be supplied by the modem.
6. Under Connection Sharing, choose Off (Bridge Mode).
7. Click Update.
The AEBS should then restart, then display the green light. Unlike before, the Airport icon no longer displays the elapsed time.
ibook300bb, please feel free to correct me if I made a mistake somewhere.
Buddhaboy 02-10-2009, 11:59 PM Charlie,
Make sure that you have a manually configured your IP address in the Network pane (i.e. it is not set to Using DHCP or Using BootP).
Give your computer an IP add 192.168.1.33 for example and use 255.255.255.0 as your subnet.
You should now be able to access the modem setup page.
Ejaxene 02-11-2009, 12:52 AM I have a different modem. :( Sad.
Does this apply to PPPoE users?
Help me please!
I lost my WiFi Friday evening. Same issues mentioned. Can connect with modem to MBP, modem to MB and modem to PC but it won't work with my AEBS. PLDT tech said something was wrong with my PC LAN card.
I'm currently attempting quasar's instructions but the browser won't open the modem configuration page. It says server is not responding. My modem is ZyXEL P-600 series. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
quasar 02-11-2009, 06:16 AM @Charlie: The default username for the modem is admin.
after setting the DSL modem, try to hard reset the Airport, then configure the AEBS following the setup assistant.
I was able to enter the modem configuration page -- finally.
But when I reach this step . . .
"6. Go to Network>LAN>DHCP Setup. Change DHCP from None to Server. Click Apply."
. . . I don't get a green "ready" at the bottom of the page.
I've had the PLDT technician over twice already and I still can't get my Wi-Fi up. My old connection used to be modem>AEBS>wired PC/wireless laptops.
Sorry to be completely ignorant about this but I need help setting up modem>AEBS>wifi (goodbye PC). Do I still need to go through the whole process of modifying my modem?
pgmac123 02-12-2009, 07:47 PM Guys I hope you can help me too.
I went through the process and when I get to -
6. Go to Network>LAN>DHCP Setup. Change DHCP from None to Server. Click Apply. it doesn't update. I get the message "invalid DHCP starting address". The starting address is 0.0.0.0, do I have to change this?
Appreciate the help.
abbadon 02-13-2009, 06:47 PM Thanks! This worked for me as well.
chrisjigaboo 02-13-2009, 07:28 PM mine's still not working :(
topaz 02-14-2009, 02:52 PM I had a similar problem with my Time Capsule. When I replaced the Time CApsule with an Airport Express, the Airport Express worked fine. (Previously my Airport express developed the same problem and Senco replaced it with a new unit) I brought the Time capsule to Senco; they just did a hard reset, tried it on their ISP and it worked.
So, I reconfigured the Time capsule to my PLDT DSL and still it exhibited the same problem. I called up PLDT but I did not get much help; they insisted that since the internet connection is OK when directly connected by ethernet to the Mac, there is no problem with PLDT. I asked to be connected with another tech support who can help me with my problem; he said, he is it.
I said that since my router works with Bayantel, i might as well transfer to Bayantel and he replied that it is my decision to make.
And so, I did. Bayantel installed the modem this afternoon and in no time I got my Time capsule to work.
So far I'm happy I did switch; Bayantel is faster. I hope it stays that way.
aldrichlim 02-14-2009, 04:05 PM i can't go to the modem's configuration page. i'm done configuring the ip address, etc. :(
help guys
chrisjigaboo 02-16-2009, 08:11 PM it's been 2 weeks....i still don't have wifi... i tried the instructions quasar posted.. still doesn't work. :(
I got P899 package. Applying was easy. I just called 4493118.
v8designstudio 02-17-2009, 06:22 PM Would you all believe that an AEBS will configure itself to work for you without you doing any configuration to it? (Except for maybe the password for your wifi which requires your input). Of course, you do need to plug it in an outlet and the internet connection properly connected to it.
I have tried this so many times with friends who have made the switch to the mac.
It will automatically configure itself so you can use internet, and your macs will automatically see the AEBS so you can use it right away.
If it isn't working. Something is wrong with the carrier.
elbert 02-20-2009, 12:58 AM A couple of weeks ago, I went to a client's house to help configure her AEBS with PLDT myDSL. For some reason, it just stopped working. I brought a brand new AirPort Extreme and a brand new AirPort Express, just in case. I thought I'd be in and out of that house in a jiffy, but I ended up staying for a couple of hours just trying to figure things out.
When the modem is connected directly to a computer, any computer, the connection would work. But when connected to the AirPort, it would result in PPPoE password failure. The same thing would happen with the brand new AEBS and the Express.
Needless to state, it was very frustrating. Customer service was no help.
In the end, I suggested they switch to SkyBroadband.
Tonight, I was called by a friend who was going through the exact same problem.
Something changed in PLDT DSL's PPPoE authentication, making Airport products incompatible.
They should just get rid of PPPoE since it's complicated and unnecessary.
The airport extreme or express n routers are the ones affected. Right now I'm using the old airport express b/g and it's working. However, I already contacted sky for installation of skybroadband and will shift.
wcnmykl 02-20-2009, 12:08 PM its weird... my boss suffered the same fate with AEBS (extremes and express)... when i install extremes and time capsules with pldt mydsl in my boss' house, it reports "you have successfully... " configured the extreme with green light on... still no internet. what i've notice was when i type the username and password in setting up AEBS with mydsl, it would always show error in the password. note that the username and password were from pldt... i called pldt nth times, still they say that it is router configuration problem...
for your info in our office, we are also using mydsl, and i never encountered this kind of problem. from modem to dual wan router to server and to switch, its A-OK! even i set it up from modem to extreme to remote express... it always worked out fine. (i isolated the router in my boss' house to test whether the AEBS is failing or not)
i called on pldt again and then right only then did i found out that we are using a wrong username and password!!! Its unfair! what in earth is pldt's reason NOT to inform the subscribers about the change in username and password?
anymore suggestions?
my boss' pldt stil doesn't work...
topaz 02-20-2009, 12:40 PM anymore suggestions?
my boss' pldt stil doesn't work...
You can tweak your modem as described in earlier posts or you can switch to other ISP's like I did. PLDT's customer service was not very helpful.
kaivar 02-20-2009, 10:25 PM I'm at my uncle's. Same issue. Extreme base station... pppoe password incorrect. Thought it was an isolated issue until I stumbled across this forum.
I do work at an internet tech sup center... tried everything that was taught to me. Bottom line, this is something with PLDT. I called them up earlier tonight asking if they were encountering issues with apple airport base stations, they told me "NO, it's a problem with the base station." Would have tried suggestions from earlier posts to configure the modem for PPPoE but they're using a Speedstream5100a here [note: DUMB MODEM, forever bridged, lol].
Broadband dialers work fine... and fast. The issue could lie with myDSL but I didn't think of bringing a spare router to check.
Then again, it could be an AEBS firmware update I'm not aware of. I'm not much of an apple user [yet... $$$$] but I do love their products.
Will try and until I feel the need to sleep... just wanted to express my feelings somewhere. :)
Good evening everyone.
PS. Would this configuration work? >>> modem>eth>pc[dialer]>usb/firewire>aebs
chrisjigaboo 02-21-2009, 01:28 AM finally my airport is working again....
Ejaxene 02-21-2009, 10:01 AM ^ What did you do?
finally my airport is working again....
Did you do some tweaking like what was mentioned here or did it just work with just the regular set up?
chrisjigaboo 02-21-2009, 11:24 AM yeah.. but there was a missing step in the instructions quasar posted. i forgot the step because the guy from power mac did it for me.
Ejaxene 02-21-2009, 11:38 AM Tsk, I think I can't make it work. I use a different modem so I don't know how to tweak things.
execute 02-23-2009, 08:31 PM I'm having the exact same 0.0.0.1 problem with my girlfriend's Time Capsule. Such an irritating problem, I'm one to logically troubleshoot things, and if it not for this thread, I would have though it is the TC that's malfunctioning.
I'll try having the modem PPPOE dialup directly, seems like the best solution.
Here's another typical situation where the technical people of PLDT mess up (maybe without them realizing it) and keep their customers and customer service group dumbfounded.
Finally had skybroadband installed. Now my airport extreme n is working perfectly without having to tweak modem settings, etc.
Ejaxene 02-24-2009, 12:08 AM Bayantel tech is coming tomorrow for installation. Bye bye to PLDT!
adelsamson 02-24-2009, 01:06 AM mine is up and running again! i had the pldt tech guy program the modem so the PPPoE and password are configured directly to the modem. that way my time machine would just be a plug and play device with minimal and no-brainer setup necessary.
if skybroadband were available here, i'd shift without even batting an eyelash!
thanks for the tip, elbert!
pgmac123 02-24-2009, 10:32 PM Solved my problem :-) had skybroadband internet installed. My time capsule is working perfectly again.
Lucky you, doc. Most PLDT DSL customers can't even get CS to accept that there is a problem in the first place.
I was trying to help a client, who got me working on a Sunday, out of desperation. I tried convincing CS that I knew what the problem was and that I knew exactly what I was talking about and what they needed to do. I requested for a tech to visit and bring a modem that could handle the PPPoE login. The lady on the phone refused to admit there was such a thing. When I persisted, she admitted it finally but told me that the line facility in my client's location is not capable of of handling such a modem.
BFS.
Problem solved: my client is now on SkyBroadband.
Ejaxene 02-25-2009, 05:31 PM My problem is now solved.
I'm on bayanDSL and can't be happier.
My speed reached 1000 kbps :)
Unfortunately, I don't have the option of BayanDSL or Sky Broadband here in my village in Alabang. Right now, I'm connected directly to the PLDT modem, since it just won't work through my Airport Extreme. My PLDT modem is the Speedtouch.
PLDT Customer Support refuses to help- they told me that many other customers use routers with no problems, and that they're not allowed to help me with router configurations.
I'm considering buying a Linksys router... think that will solve my problem?
That will probably solve it, albeit a wasteful solution. Its like buying a scooter to get to your car parked outside your house. Sucks, right? Blame PLDT. Make sure you're getting one that's going to work, I think someone in the first few pages also had this same problem with a Linksys router. You should get the cheapest router you can find, since you're effectively buying a machine that will just handle PPPOE authentication, thanks to PLDT's incompetence. My girlfriend is also from AAV, I've setup her modem (its a PL-DSL2?) to dial directly. Everything's working fine now. Maybe you can request for a different modem if yours can't dial directly, that's if you can manage to wait. And wait, you will.
I have a theory with what's happening here. I think PLDT accidentally banned (or assigned to IP 0.0.0.1) all MAC addresses starting with whatever series Apple was assigned for their AE/TC's. Whatever it is, there's a lawsuit in there for Apple against PLDT.
p.pipster 03-01-2009, 08:30 PM Has anyone successfully configured their basestation with myDSL? I'm on Smart Bro and plan to switch to DSL and unfortunately only PLDT serves our area currently.
elbert 03-02-2009, 02:52 PM A workaround to this problem would be to buy a cheap wired router that can handle the PPPoE authentication. In that router, you can kill the DHCP servet and just let the AirPort do the routing.
The configuration would be this way:
PLDT DSL modem -> cheap router -> AirPort Extreme/Express/TimeCapsule
Essentially, the cheap router would be nothing more than a PPPoE login device.
kalbs 03-02-2009, 04:15 PM lawsuit for Apple against PLDT?
elbert 03-02-2009, 04:31 PM lawsuit for Apple against PLDT?
huh? Why would Apple sure PLDT? If anyone should sue PLDT, it's the subscribers who cannot get their money's worth.
execute 03-05-2009, 09:13 AM huh? Why would Apple sure PLDT? If anyone should sue PLDT, it's the subscribers who cannot get their money's worth.
If my theory is correct (MAC Addresses being banned/assigned to 0.0.0.1) then Apple indeed has grounds for a lawsuit against PLDT. PLDT effectively made their network incompatible with Apple's products, which can be considered as discrimination. I'm no lawyer, though but I think Apple has a case.
jennys 03-05-2009, 05:03 PM This happened to me in January, I suddenly could not connect via wifi. Directly connecting via ethernet did not work too.
PLDT went to my house and according to them, it's my Mac that has the problem because they were able to connect using a pc.
Anyway, i found a work-around solution - i just have to manually delete the location and create a new location in the network preference then type in my PPOE name and password everytime I need to connect to the internet. It's a pain doing it manually everytime but at least I get to use my wifi.
jovanpuyo 03-09-2009, 12:40 PM Thanks to everyone who shared the workaround in PLDT's wonderful modem. Now my brand new AEBS is working!
Backspace 03-10-2009, 09:49 PM Oh no this is pretty much my problem too. I went to SWiTCH and they sent the unit to Singapore! It's been three weeks and they haven't returned it yet. I assumed it was a broken AEBS because I could connect my macbook directly to the modem.
iamdel 06-18-2009, 02:45 PM hai.
i just had the same problem this morning. our router can't have a stable connection to pldt dsl. my laptop can detect the wireless connection but is unable to connect to the internet.
i was hesitant to think it was the router because we just bought the belkin router last week from the sale. and our previous router, dlink was also unable to establish a connection.
but we can connect to the internet if we connect directly to the modem.
i feel its going to take ages again before pldt will make a technical support.
hai.
thumper 06-18-2009, 02:59 PM TC somehow have problem if the configuration set up as ppoe, the only solution is to let PLDT replace your modem with modem that has routing capabilities and set up TC /Aiport Extreme on DHCP. i think TC and Airport Extreme have this problems, ive tested it on Airport express using PPOE hindi naman nagkakaproblem.
quasar 06-18-2009, 03:09 PM Try connecting your computer directly to the DSL modem first. If you still can't connect to the internet, it could mean either your modem is defective or PLDT had migrated you from the legacy PPPoE system to the new configuration where no account name or password is required.
I lost internet connection last weekend and it was caused both by a bad modem and the migation to the new setup. Just give PLDT a call. Response time has improved a bit; a PLDT technician came by less than 24 hours after I made my initial complaint.
how are you connecting? do you still have a login and password which means you're still on their old system.
Or are you connecting by automatic detect which means you're already migrated to their new system.
Check the base station configuration. You may have migrated already and they didn't inform you.
Thats probably because you're already migrated on their new system already. Everything is set to automatic detect IP, no more login name and passwords. You say you can access the internet sometimes? Does the DSL light on the Zyxel modem drop out sometimes? That would mean you have an unstable connection. Tell that to the PLDT helpline and have a technician come over and asses your problem. Could be faulty old phone wiring which is the most common problem.
I have that problem too. Despite replacing my phone wires with brand new ones, my line attenuation is too high (noise) which is probably the reason for the sporadic disconnections. If you know how to access your modem, you can check this. Am going to have the PLDT technician check my setup again...
There's a firmware update for airport extreme and express which fixes an issue when connecting to PPOE. Maybe this should solve the problem.
Mad Mac 08-01-2009, 11:04 AM I've been having daily wifi dropouts on my AEBS (old one with modem). I reset does the job. But it is irritating when it happens in the middle of the night and then my downloads stop. The firmware is updated (5.7). I use WEP encryption. My isp is MyDestiny.
When the dropout occurs, my Airport Utility cannot see the AEBS. Of course internet stops. At this point reseting remotely isn't possible. Is there a fix or an explanation for this?
loko__loko 08-01-2009, 12:57 PM mad mac... that happens to me too (extreme snow type)... airport signal drops, i have to take off plug and replug
retinasurgeon 09-05-2009, 08:10 PM @loko_loko: I'll try.
First, make sure the Mac is connected to the DSL modem via Ethernet. The following steps are for the Zyxel P-600 modem.
A. Creating a new service. As a precautionary measure, I created a new service rather than modify either my built-in Ethernet or PLDT MyDSL settings.
1. On the Mac, go to System Preferences>Network
2. Click the plus (+) sign under the network connection services list to create a new service. A dialogue box will appear.
3. For interface, choose Ethernet. Create your own service name to distinguish it from other Ethernet-based connections.
4. In the Configure menu for the new service, choose Manually. Enter the following addresses (taken from pinoydsl.net):
IP Address: 192.168.1.33
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.1
5. Click Apply. The new service will now be connected, or active.
B. Modifying the modem settings
1. Launch your browser, then type in the address 192.168.1.1
2. The browser will open into the modem's configuration page.
3. You'll be prompted for a password. The default in 1234.
4. After that, you'll be asked what method you want to use to update settings. Choose Advanced.
5. Go to Network>WAN>Internet Connection, change the Mode to Routing, then the Encapsulation to PPPoE. Dialogue boxes will appear for your ISP username and password. Enter them, then click Apply.
6. Go to Network>LAN>DHCP Setup. Change DHCP from None to Server. change server to 192.168.1.1 Click Apply.
7. Go to Network>NAT>General. Check Active Network Address Translation. Make sure the button for SUA Only is chosen. Click Apply.
C. Configuring Airport
1. Disconnect the Mac from the modem, then connect the AEBS to modem (using the AEBS's WAN port).
2. Launch Airport Utility. Use Manual Setup.
3. Click the Internet icon.
4. Under Connect Using, choose Ethernet.
5. Under Configure IPv4, choose Using DHCP. The modem's address (192.168.1.1) should appear as the Router Address. The IP address for the AEBS will be supplied by the modem.
6. Under Connection Sharing, choose Off (Bridge Mode).
7. Click Update.
The AEBS should then restart, then display the green light. Unlike before, the Airport icon no longer displays the elapsed time.
ibook300bb, please feel free to correct me if I made a mistake somewhere.
This has been a very big help for me. I went to sell my Airport Extreme because of the problem with the PPPoE. After buying a new TIme Capsule from Apple Store Philippines, had the same problem but I managed to connect after altering my modem settings with this instructions. I added the server setting so people won't have a hard time back reading. Thanks!!!
pelican 11-26-2009, 03:32 AM Can we now see the elapsed time on the latest Airport? Any latest development on this matter?
benzng 01-24-2010, 09:35 AM ok i just convinced my sister to buy AExtreme and AExpress. After expecting a hassle free installation, I allocated 30 min to install it only to find out the PPoe problems. hay
benzng 01-24-2010, 02:59 PM A workaround to this problem would be to buy a cheap wired router that can handle the PPPoE authentication. In that router, you can kill the DHCP servet and just let the AirPort do the routing.
The configuration would be this way:
PLDT DSL modem -> cheap router -> AirPort Extreme/Express/TimeCapsule
thanks for posting this Elbert. :) i manage to solve the problem by doing this.
PLDT router to old linksys then extreme then express. i found out express cant extend a linksys wifi so had to do extreme then express. after that no problems anymore and 90% of the house has wifi signal.
Mad Mac 01-24-2010, 05:36 PM PPPOE problems can occur when BOTH the AEBS and the Mac are setup to connect via PPPOE. After setting up PPPOE on the AEBS, remove your PPPOE setup on the Mac. Or just create a new network location and use the default settings.
The problem arises when you connect your Mac direct to the modem to "diagnose" a problem. From then on, you are doomed. After connecting directly, remove PPPOE settings on your Mac if you wish to connect via wifi soon after.
EmerA 06-09-2010, 09:35 PM Just wanted to check the status of Philmuggers who did the workaround on the zyxel modem..how is your AEBS working now? I'm looking at upgrading my router to this.
jcasmd 12-01-2010, 06:05 AM Has PLDT solved this problem with AEBS already or do I still have to apply the workaround? I'm planning to replace my old router with an AEBS.
Mad Mac 12-01-2010, 06:42 AM It was probably not a PLDT problem. If one had to change the dns then it was just a network setup thing. The choice of dns was a user preference. Sometimes I use it, and sometimes I use that from Google.
Thanks Mad Mac. So if I buy an AEBS now, can I expect a smooth, hassle-free set-up with PLDT myDSL. I'm choosing the AEBS over other router since reviews say it is one of the easiest routers to set up. I'm a windows 7 user by the way but I plan to migrate to Mac when the next gen MBP comes out (hence the choice of AEBS). Any inputs from new AEBS owners subscribed to PLDT myDSL?
I'm using AEBS with PLDT myDSL. no complicated configuration needed. i'm using pldt auto/provided dns with no problem. it's ok to use it with windows but it's best with mac since you can setup your time machine on the airport disk which windows can't utilize this feature.
@Ikon, when did you buy/setup your AEBS? Recently lang? So no need to tinker with the modem configuration? Are you also using PLDT-supplied Zyxel P-600 modem?
yes, i'm using pldt-supplied zyxel p-600 modem. bought my AEBS 6 mos. ago. it has a configuration wizard to help you set-up your router initially, though i prefer the manual set-up, but with pldt its almost all settings are set to auto. however, you should need to know few things regarding setting the wireless security type for your router. my previous router is linksys, it's easier to set-up the airport extreme. it's what apple do best, to make it easier/simpler for the user.
jcasmd 12-01-2010, 10:34 PM Thanks Ikon. I have a linksys router myself but it's acting up lately. Nice to know that there's no more problem with PLDT and AEBS.
Mad Mac 12-02-2010, 11:27 AM Ease of use will depend on the person. For one thing the AEBS will not use a browser for setup. On Windows, you will need to install the Airport Utility. I have not tried the AEBS and Windows from scratch so I wouldn't know if it is easy or not. But I do know that I am a techie and can do it one way or another.
jcasmd 12-05-2010, 05:04 PM I can confirm. No more issues between AEBS and PLDT myDSL. Got my AEBS today and was able to set it up in 5 minutes. Working great. :)
ijingo 04-09-2011, 11:59 AM PPPOE problems can occur when BOTH the AEBS and the Mac are setup to connect via PPPOE. After setting up PPPOE on the AEBS, remove your PPPOE setup on the Mac. Or just create a new network location and use the default settings.
The problem arises when you connect your Mac direct to the modem to "diagnose" a problem. From then on, you are doomed. After connecting directly, remove PPPOE settings on your Mac if you wish to connect via wifi soon after.
I think this would solve my problem on a different thread I started. I realized the technician from Bayantel made new service using PPPoE. He connected the modem directly to the computer. This is what he did since he doesn't have any idea on Airport Extreme. Hope this will.
This is the thread. (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=70096&highlight=airport+extreme)
ijingo 06-05-2011, 03:54 PM I have already removed the PPPoE settings in my mac. but still i cannot make it work. I wonder why Linksys works smoothly. I think I need to request a replacement modem of DSL. Since they replaced my modem, ganito na. Wala naman sana problem before nung luma pa modem ko.
Over-all, parang hindi naman sa modem, kasi it works with Linksys. AEBS ang problem.
Kiddomike 06-06-2011, 10:58 AM When my ISP changed settings from using PPPoE to using DHCP. I did a hard reset on my AirPort Express and AirPort Utility did all the work. (I tried manually updating the settings but it didn't work. Then, I let the AirPort Utility automatically set up my AirPort Express. it worked! Apple knows best. Hehehe!)
Mad Mac 06-06-2011, 11:15 AM open network settings and see if you get greenlight for Airport. Open Airport Utility and find the tab where it reports a lan connection. See if that lan connects to the modem.
Sometimes the modem's lan section gets busted but the modem itself works.
In short review all connection data to help you diagnose.
ijingo 06-06-2011, 06:37 PM When I connected my Linksys, it worked for a while then the internet intermittenly cut-off. I had a feeling it was the LAN cable that is busted even if its new. When I changed the cable with the old one that worked before, my internet connection is now stable. So I will try to use this old cable with the AEBS if it works. Thanks for the input as well sirs.
ijingo 06-07-2011, 12:47 PM Internet connection is now stable for the past 2 days using the old lan cable, the bad thing is, still it doesn't work with airport extreme, so im concluding that its not the modem nor the cable. its the AEBS, any idea if this can be repaired?thanks
Mad Mac 06-07-2011, 01:22 PM It still doesn't mean the AEBS is broken. Just fire up Airport Utility and see the summary. Why not post the picture here. Open Preferences too. Click on network and see what it reports for wifi. You should have a green light and a valid ip.
What you can also do is test the AEBS on somebody's modem. Ideally the AEBS should be reset so that it has no offending cached info.
There is a bigger chance of a modem going south than the AEBS (except Time Capsule) breaking down.
Sedonus 06-12-2011, 05:00 PM Just a note, I have an AEBS as well but no longer use it. I'm using an older Linksys I had. I get faster speeds through it. I had Bayantel up until 1 month ago and it was PPPOE. I had fits with it at first (wouldn't stay connected) and it stabilized finally... I'm not sure why. It was definitely the AEBS. I never could get top speeds using the AEBS. If I ever had a big download (movies from iTunes) then I would connect to the Bayantel modem directly to my Mac and it would literally double sometimes triple my speed. The odd thing is that any speed tests I did via the internet (speedtest.net) would have the same results but if I started downloading a file it would just do horrible. The same goes for any gaming I would do PS3 wise (which in itself has it's own issues no matter what internet carrier you have).
I'm now on PLDT and while it is not PPPOE I was hoping it would allow me to once again use my AEBS. Well... it did work o.k. but I found again that my older Linksys was the better choice as it had a more powerful signal. Not even using the 5GHZ option helped. The old Linksys would win when it came to signal strength throughout my house. I love Apple and own many Apple products but the AEBS sure has been a let down. (FYI it is my second AEBS, the first being a first gen 1 TB Time Capsule which broke down after a year... the hard drive failed. I use it as a simple router now and have a new AEBS at my home which, as I just related, is not even used now...)
There is your problem right there. You have set pppoe on BOTH the Mac and AEBS. The AEBS doesn't seem to like that. Delete or change the pppoe settings on the Mac. These are the ones you set to connect your Mac via lag cable to the modem. AEBS should work fine after that.
