View Full Version : The BEST way to get out of the iPhone Apple Logo Screen of Death!

You know what I'm talking about. If you're a power iPhone user, this has happened to you many times. You've had to live with Restores a-plenty to get it back working.

I've had this happened too many times to count, sometimes with terribly bad timing. The culprit always seems to be some kind of new App install or update. The worst part is sometimes it kills the iPhone Restore from Backup and i need to set it up as a new one.

I've finally found a solution online called "The DarwinianDude Fix" that works each and every time. You'll need your iPhone, a laptop with iTunes, and your sync cable, and approximately 15-20 minutes.

Here we go!

1. Connect to iTunes via USB. Do NOT disconnect for rest of these steps. iTunes may appear frozen or stuck with spinning beachball....this is okay, do NOT Force Quit iTunes. I tried a few times w/o it being connected to iTunes and it doesn't work.

2. Once connected, hold Home + Power until screen blinks then Apple logo comes back up.

3. Wait until Apple logo dims slightly (~5 minutes or less). Do NOT reboot until the apple logo dims.

4. Hold Home + Power again until it reboots and Apple logo comes back up.

5. After 2 min or so, the phone may vibrate once or twice. Continue waiting for the full 5 min until Apple logo dims slightly. iTunes at this stage MAY recognize the phone...do not sync or do anything in iTunes.

6. Hold Home + Power for the 3rd time until it reboots. Phone may vibrate again after 2 minutes or so. Eventually you'll break into your Home screen.

So in a nutshell... hard reset your phone and let it stand until the APPLE LOGO dims, then hard reset again.

How does it work? When you install an app, something get corrupted on your iPhone. When you reset it, it does some mojo to fix it. You need to let it finish!!! The iPhone dims when the fix is done.

I've personally done this many times and it worked all times.

Good luck!

Wow thanks! Is this where the Apple logo boots and boots again? BOOT CYCLE? I will try this if it happens again. I just restored mine today.

this is a new method compared to the 15mins dim I found in applei.ph. This happened three times to me already for this week and it's so frustrating. Too bad I already restored after whole day of trying to get it out of the Apple Logo screen of death.

Leo, is this applicable for the 1st Gen too? I've tried to wait for my iPhone to dim after a reboot (even up to 15 mins) but it didn't dim whatsoever. There were instances that it vibrate on certain reboot but I didn't know the cue of properly kicking it out of this cycle. At least this is a new option for me next time I get this problem.

Leo, do you need to be online to do this or can this be done without the internet connection?

Hi gang!

Mukhang madami nga ang may endless apple loop :-)
I'll try my best to answer questions.

@bacchus
Yes this works with the old iPhone. i don't have the 3G. The main difference between this and the applei solution is that your phone does not need to be jailbroken. Make sure it's connected to your Mac and iTunes is running.

@Dominique
You don't need to be online.

Hope this works for you guys! Of course however, all this may be for naught if iPhone 2.1 arrives tomorrow and fixes the bugs.... i hope i hope i hope....

I'll wait for the iPhone 2.1 first before I try this.
But this is so informative Leo, thanks very much.

YES!!! Just after my restore, my iPhone is stuck in the cycle again - had two app updates. This really works. Although I had to reboot my phone for around 4 or 5 times. You just have to be patient to wait for the boot logo to dim slightly. Salamat salamat Leo!

...but hopefully 2.1 will sort this out tomorrow.

bacchus_3, how would you know that the apple logo is dimming slightly? so, i have to watch the logo all the time, for 5 minutes at a time? i was trying to do it but i must have missed something. it just kinda connects back to itunes.

dj, I found it difficult to see the 'slight' dim too. I have to look at the iPhone screen for about 5-10 minutes and see it dim. When you restart the iPhone, the apple logo is shiny bright. If it dims it is still shiny but not like 'mirror shiny' :) HTH

My own technique was to work on my macbook while the iPhone is in my periphery vision. My eye is at least sensitive to a change in light intensity.

Edit: When you say it connects back to iTunes, your iPhone is out of the reboot loop?

i think i also experienced this but what i did is to reset the phone (the usual reset steps) and let it reboot by itself. This will take really long time but it will reboot, be patient :)

waiting time is about the time mentioned by leocastillo, only difference is you dont need to do anything but wait after reset.

@chuckee, that's just probably normal long reboot. Mine was in the apple logo for hours - longest was probably 3 hours or more that I'm forced to reboot again.

dear all:

which app or apps do you think is/are causing this?

maybe we can establish a common ground (ie a certain app) that is causing the hangs and reboots- therefore, all we need is to avoid that app or those apps like the plague.

thanks.

is there any other more "scientific" method of waiting for the apple logo to dim? i'm getting hypnotized. haha!

HI Dj! The dimming of the of the iPhone logo is very distinct, you can't miss it.
If it doesn't dim after 10 minutes, try hard resetting again.

For a scientific approach, try using your light meter? :-)

is there a way where from the Apple Logo of Death, that I'll just do a restore to original factory settings without doing the hard reset?

The multiple hard resets works, but I find it too consuming kaya gusto ko na lang i restore sya sa factory settings without any fuss and just reupload na lang ulet to have a clean slate?

Hi Trex, you can but you need to put your phone in DFU Mode.

You'll need a stopwatch for this one. Here's what you do:

1. Plug in your iPhone. Run iTunes.
2. Hold the Power and Home Button for EXACTLY TEN SECONDS (that's why you have a stopwatch).
3. Release only the Power Button but still holding the Home Button.
4. After 10 seconds, iTunes should detect the iPhone and should say it's in recovery mode.

From there, restore using Firmware. After the restore, the iPhone will be in blank "like new" condition.

Having said that, I find this system much longer than the multiple hard resets. You need to restore the phone's firmware, restore your backups and load your apps & media. i find that it takes at LEAST two hours for this whole process.

^^ I'd rather do Leo's tip than go the DFU route. Yes, it takes way more than two hours for me - wasted two sleepless nights before finding Leo's tip.

so i guess (theoretically) it should also work if i just leave each hard reset say for half an hour (while i do something more productive :) ), and just check back on my iPhone.

am about to do this but on my iPhone. thanks.

yes, i tried this on the itouch 1st gen, it worked. :) It'll restore it but if ever u have the passcode on, you have to switch it back on again, cause after i did this, it turned off. Didn't lose data or whatsoever though :)

Is this suppose to happen to a 3gS (with FW 3.1)? I've tried the resetting option but can't/unable to distinguish the "dimming of the light"...in less than 5 minutes, the light just totally disappears. I've spent over an hour on it and has given up...I went with the 2nd option (DFU) and now on the restoring iphone process in iTunes...I really hope this works.

Cooldadnairb, this was an old iPhone problem. It doesn't exist in the current firmware anymore.

I guess with all the FW updates & bug fixes this should not be an issue with the iPhone anymore...but I believe this is what happened to mine...last thing I remember doing was updating 5 Apps using iTunes then syncing my phone. After a few moments it started acting up...I turned it off then waited for a minute then tried to turn it back on...but it wouldn't go pass the apple logo. It was like that for 4 hours after numerous hard resets...I tried the first option you provided in this thread but it wasn't working so I went with the 2nd one and thankfully, my iPhone's risen from its apple logo death. :D

It may be a different issue or not, the important thing is I was able to resolve it using the steps you laid out in this thread...Thanks a bunch Leo!
