View Full Version : proper care 4 earphones/headphones.
andrew_o_o 07-28-2008, 08:36 PM how do u guys store ur earphones?. im accustomed to wrapping my earphone cord around my ipod. vertically top to bottom.
these few days my ipod earphones have been dissassembling themselves. (rubber parts coming off/tearing. so ive put on an order for some sennheisers. but being expensive as these come, i wouldnt want to subject em to the abuse i gave my stock ipod earphones. (i heard that wrapping the earphones around the ipod is bad for the earphones)
so... whats the proper way to store earphones? assuming i just finished using my ipod and im going to put my ipod in my pocket (no bags). does winding it up gently around my palm before storing it in my pocket sound good?
jaijin 07-28-2008, 08:47 PM i use an empty altoids container, keeps it protected from dust and trauma.
Mad Mac 07-28-2008, 08:57 PM Caring for phones is a nice idea. My Re2 phones came with a leather case. However, the cords will degrade no matter how much you care for it. Usually the cord gets gummy or dry out and crack. If that doesn't kill your phones, wear and tear will. Eventually you get a break in the cable. the most we can do for them it to be careful in handling the cable. Avoid sharply bending them repeatedly like wrapping around the ipod. I bunch mine up to form a ring. Then I have a velcro strap to hold the wound up cable. That's the most I can do.

My B & O set is barely two months old and already, I've nearly pulled one of the wires off the microphone/controller button even if I've taken the precaution of using the leather pouch that it came with when not in use. Over the years, I've destroyed half a dozen or so earphones. Some due to carelessness, others due to plain accident.
No matter how well-built they are, nearly all of them will fail, at some point, because they are so fragile.
onyxd 07-28-2008, 09:19 PM i think these earphones expire in 4-5months of using...
everything just falls apart... one day they were just fine tapos kinabukasan wala na.. lasog lasog na sila..
ive noticed this on ALL of my apple earphones kasama na sa kapatid ko... 7 apple earphones lahat...
but they still do their jobs.. not just as pretty as before... napuputolo natatanggal ung mga rubber parts...

Lol... sorry... i just noticed that Mad Mac joined two years ago and naka 495 posts lang xa samantalang raypin joined just last month and he already have 503 posts.. ^__^
anyway, i think apple deliberately made it this way for us to buy their earphones every few months...
bobotski 07-28-2008, 10:11 PM those rubber parts of the stock iPod earphones are like clay after a few months... they just deform and fall off your buds...
rapsquared 07-29-2008, 02:18 AM I wrap my sennheisers around my ipod as well, they still seem ok, but yup a case is a nice idea, or earphone wraps
Skint 07-30-2008, 03:43 AM Guys any idea what solution to make it clean the rubber parts of the earphones mine is getting light brown already. The actual color was white.
Any liquid solution that you will recommend to remove or lessen this kind of discoloration?

mmm......nakaka addict Philmug. When I sink my teeth into something I like, I almost always never let go.
On the serious side, I like Philmug for the info since I'm a relatively recent switcher......with the other foot firmly entrenched in Peecees (a love affair that stretches back in the 1980s).
rdy0329 07-30-2008, 07:17 PM Mine also falls apart, I preserved the earphone of my iPhone and just use my iPod nano's earphone, I put it up with black cover so that it would last at least 10 months, it lasted 9 months without falling apart, now my earphone's rubber is broken off and the plug is also tearing apart. I still make it look okay because the earphone is covered wth black cotton. I'll use it until the sound dies.
raypin 07-30-2008, 08:12 PM The wires usually fray where its connected to the buds. What I did was to reinforce the connections with just a liliputian bit of ordinary superglue. Same with other separables.......
iVanpa3ck 10-30-2008, 11:54 PM nasira na in ang ipod bundled earphone ko..i bought mx450..sounds great!!!
Skint 11-01-2008, 12:42 AM Mine torn out the rubber near the phones the stem part of the phones ugly already after 5 months.
Why is it?
They really turn into a gum like when they have contacts with fats of your skin.
Maybe a chemical reaction with the type of rubber to the fats of our skin thats why it dissolved after few months of frequent contacts.
I guess but a little cheaper earphones like EP 360 same sound with senn's CX 300.
paolo. 11-01-2008, 01:53 AM It's Probably because Apple uses recyclable materials (maybe that's the explanation behind the iPod Earphones to be just like that)
On the other hand, some earphones like senn's, bose, etc (those with high quality products) doesn't deteriorate that easily.
Moreover, Proper care and maintenance it a PLUS factor keeping your earphones in good shape.
Skint 11-01-2008, 02:58 AM Mine was not apple it was AKG same 324p same material with apple and Senns CX 300.
I have also a friend who is an OC with earphones he has Senn CX 300 same thing happened.
The rubber near the phone as I called it the stem turn into bubble gum like then torn out even you dint touch it.
I guess when it was rub to your skin with oils plus heat of your skin (friction or body heat) which is unavoidable when you are using that into your ears.
Life span of stem rubber earphones 4 to 5 months.
paolo. 11-02-2008, 05:18 PM Wah! :( ganun ba yun skint?
never knew... I guess dapat bilin nya ung sporty style ng senn... As I see it, you use the earphones while jogging or doing exercise.
I think that the every earphone has it's limits (outdoors or indoors). Altough, again proper care and maintenance is the key in prolonging the life span of your earphones :D
bluesoda00 11-03-2008, 04:52 PM yung earphones nung classic pa gamit ko, tumagal ng 1 yr. no visible damage or wear and tear except 'putim' na sya. araw - araw ba namang exposed sa pollution e lol. sigruo asa gumagamit lang yan. yung classic ko nga, di mo akalain na 1 yr na e. kaya nabenta ko with a good price, kapalit ng ipod touch.
ako_si_Mac 01-29-2009, 07:07 PM According to one website, Klipsch custom 3 earphones are pretty durable..
And I thought I could find salvation for my earphones here.. Seems replacement is the wisest choice. The rubber around the ear piece is now starting to peel off. The wires starting to get dirty and It seemed wiping the thing with alcohol-moistened tissue worsened the situation. Now the wires are a bit horribly sticky. :( My only consolation was that it lasted more than 7-8months worth of sweaty audio ventures.
A bit OT: Any preference on good earphones? Price/aesthetics considered.
carlozesteban 09-29-2009, 08:21 AM for me, i clean my head & ear phones by wiping them off (top to bottom) with alcohol once in a while.
for the cord, i'm not really caring for them much since they're thick & durable enough to withstand abuse. i even coil them up to lessen their length without probs. :D
@ako_si_Mac: yea... i think they are. well, at their price... i think they better be. :)

are you using an in-ear thingy? if yes, try replacing the earbuds instead.
are the wires white in color? if yes, they'll always become dirty no matter what.
hmm.. try using other things to wipe them off other than tissue.

I'm using those default ones that comes with the iPod touch.
I'm more concerned about the rubbers getting a bit sticky, they're like disintegrating. I see that you wipe your earphones with alcohol too. That's good to know. I started too think the alcohol melted my earphones. lol

oh i see..
hehehe... maybe you're just pressing too hard when wiping them. :) try it gently but with more strokes.
dryxzzz 09-29-2009, 11:37 PM Wipe the cords with Magic Eraser or any of its kind, not with alcohol or any other solutions.
carlozesteban 09-30-2009, 06:22 PM you mean the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser? hmm.. isn't it abrasive?
Damire 09-30-2009, 06:42 PM my earphone/headphones experiences...
senn mx400, been using it for 3 years now. after i used them, i always put them back on its casing (the one that comes with the package). this baby already have gone through a lot with me. i've replaced the earfoam for about 4 times now and the unit is still working great. though it already looks old and the markings have already worn out, sounds still great.
senn px100, using it for 2 years. same thing as mx400, put it back to its case after used. i've replaced the earfoam twice already and still sounds great.
recently bought a cx300 II. and as a habit from my previous units, put it back to its leather case after use.
though it may be a hassle to take out and put the earphones/headphones back to the casing, but once you make it habit, it'll just be like turning your ipod on and off. you'll realize on the long run that the effort that you've put in taking care of them will be worth it. it's basically the same as one saying goes... "Prevention is better than cure..." ;)
KiDKUMAG 09-30-2009, 09:02 PM Wipe the cords with Magic Eraser or any of its kind, not with alcohol or any other solutions.
This is a pretty cool suggestion.

They maybe abrasive but not as corrosive as alcohol or other cleaning solutions. You really don't have to over-do it or wipe hard. One pass is enough and wipe it gently once a week.
Choose for the lesser evil. ;)
cedricbv 10-01-2009, 03:18 AM I've got a lot of advices here... Thanks for all the informations...
onyxd 10-01-2009, 10:42 AM when your earbuds start to get sticky and feels like they are disintegrating, try rubbing some face powder on them. it will feel smooth again. works like magic. i dont know if it works for a long time though because i gave it away after a week so i dont know if it really stopped the "melting" stage of the apple earbuds.

where can i buy earfoams? mine is starting to give up already
kathieyakie 10-09-2009, 09:49 PM yung earphones ba na sold seperately...the regular apple earphones have the same quality with those that comes free with ipods or iphones?
if it does.. its just a waste of money to buy another one?
Jerico 10-11-2009, 11:41 PM i have two stock ipod touch earphones, now without rubbers around them, sucks big time....bought a creative EP-630 for 1.3k, cool enough I think.
csc2ky 10-12-2009, 04:43 PM where can i buy earfoams? mine is starting to give up already
I get the foam pieces to put on the earphones at Japanese Home stores. They have white, gray, black and usually come as a 5pcs. set for P88.... Or you can get the same from Belkin for P350, which in my opinion is a bit overkill for these little foam pieces.
alanis_junkie 10-13-2009, 03:32 PM CDRKing also sells foams that can be used for the apple earphones, an officemate is currently using one..i might buy one as well since my earphones' rubbers fell out na din
slight OT for those thinking of buying replacement earphones: i'm currently using ifrogz plugz...it has decent output..better than INK'd by skullcandy but creative's EP630 is still better..i like the design of the plugz kase ;)
bought it for only 700 pesos :D
ste@lth 10-13-2009, 04:01 PM sorry for this question but just want to ask, since most original iphone earphones rubber parts are wearing off, is there a good replacement for this earphones that also has a built in MIC that can be used like the original?
Whats your budget and do you plan on buying locally?
ste@lth 10-14-2009, 03:50 PM budget is discretionary, but yes i plan to by locally...
You can also buy those foam inserts at most Cellphone tiangges or PSP shops
@csc2ky
wow didn't know belkins prices where that high in manila, saw those some foam by belkin on sale at most shops abroad...
If i can only sell at those same prices i'd get a truck load delivered hehehe
kathieyakie 10-15-2009, 01:40 AM Did anyone saw the exo silicon covers for the earphones whicH is better the belkin foams or those silicon stuff? Do the silicon will affect sound quality cz it's covered and have holes)
I'm kindof thinking of the iangel cord wraps( if that's the correct term) with free earphones cover not the including the speaker though just the gray part
@kathieyakie
I'm not sure what that brand looks like...
I think you're saying those "adapters" that look like "in-ear" attachments???(i think apple sells these as well...)
there's also those that function like the foam but are silicon(haven't seen these in awhile...)
anyway sound quality isn't affected much by attaching those ummm... attachments hehehe =j
kathieyakie 10-16-2009, 04:04 PM ^ thanks for the infoü I just bought foams. I hope they'll fit my earphonesü
