Best Skins Ever? Join me in this review and judge for yourself.

The iPod Touch Bestskinsever® arrived in an unassuming legal size envelope. This, to their credit pre-dates the MacBook Air’s unveiling with a Manila envelope (wink). To be honest, it’s a practical shipping method. It arrived in 8 days from the U.S.

The skins came in two sheets on decal paper. Instructions had to be read online at www.bestskinsever.com. It is a page long pdf document written to give confidence for the shock to come.

Application required thorough cleaning of the iPod Touch unless you fancy embedding your and your pet’s dna forever. The iPod was turned off. Next comes preparing a soapy solution in a shallow dish. What the… I don’t like the idea of water getting anywhere near my iPod. Assured by the how-to document, I went ahead and mixed an ml of shampoo in a dish of water. I just mixed in as little as I could to get a slimy feel.

Having psyched myself out and being emotionally prepared to buy a new iPod just in case, I dipped the front skin (adhesive down) in the solution. After the excess fluid dripped, I took a deep breath and laid it on the iPod. This was tricky. Squeezing out the fluid with a credit card had the film moving and misaligning. It seemed impossible to get it to sit still. But as the fluid was patted out with a micro fiber cloth, it soon grabbed on. Having achieved adhesion, I then squeezed out fluid and bubbles.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l225/ginopunsalan/Best%20Skins%20Ever/back.jpg

The main area of the film stuck well on the screen. The edges and the periphery of the screen and bezel did not. It took many hours for them to dry up and grab. The gaps between the screen and bezel took overnight to dry out and grab. My impatience trying to stick them during the day resulted in micro foaming. The next day when I was finally able to stick them, I had fossilized micro bubbles that formed an outline around the screen. It is negligible at first glance. But in hindsight, I should have left it alone until the next day.

A few hours later, I started on the back. Same procedure. Lesson learned. The back did not have the challenges of the gaps like the front. But it did have the curved corners. The film laid flat quite well. I lucked out with no air bubbles just like on the front. After patting it dry, the broad side and top pieces clung on like magnets. Phew. That was a relief. The corners, with its small fingers, were stubborn. I left those hanging in the air as I grabbed coffee at Starbucks. When I got back with the courage that caffeine provided, I pressed on the fingers and viola! They stuck on. I then left the iPod on the table and covered with the micro fiber cloth.

The next day, I pressed on any stubborn areas. They quickly stuck. To my relief, the gaps between the bezel and screen also stuck quite well, albeit, with a ring of fossilized micro bubbles.

The finished product looked good. It had a very nice rippled gloss which reminded me of polycarbonate rc shells that were painted on the inside. It had a very deep shine. The feel however was disappointing. It was tacky. I lost the unprotected glide just as you would with a, errr.., condom. Hmm, perhaps some lube will help excite the experience.

Great job! Saw a similar product at Digital Walker Trinoma and was thinking of getting it.

Q: Are the edges also covered?

Yes they are. The top and side films don't meet up. I like this because I don't feel the edges of the film. Clarity is so good I am having problems seeing where the edges are LOL. Time will tell if the adhesive is good.

I posted this in another thread (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=30366) - just a redux: Skins from DecalGirl. Comes with a downloadable matching wallpaper. Unlike your experience (two days to finish?), this was a no-brainer - no 'fossilized micro bubbles either'. The best thing for me, aside from the ease of application, is that my design of choice sets my iPod Touch apart from all the rest within my social circle.

The material is tough, can be reapplied without messing up, and best of all, can be taken off without leaving residues, smudges or any trace it's been there at all. All yours for the wonderful price of $6.99 (plus shipping)...

p.s. Doesn't feel tacky either... If you're up to it, get a matching set for your PSP, Wii, MacBook, PS2, XBox 360, iPhone, RAZR, Guitar Hero gear (Yes!), Blackberry Curve - the list is mind boggling!

That is nice. I am sure you love it. As for me, I like what Apple did. I just hate seeing the scuffs build up each day even with the best of care. Interesting that yours is not sticky. Does it glide like oem? Do they have that in clear? Is it substantially thick enough to protect?

BTW, it doesn't show up well in the photo, but the back portion does curve around the corners, and with no cutouts like those in yours. Your review reminds me of a similar experience I had with Invisible Shield (http://www.shieldzone.com/). The company claims that their product is practically bullet proof. What they didn't tell me was that the darn thing was a tough mother to apply, also messy and involves spraying the unit with their own liquid (included) and a plastic squeegee. Careful and meticulous as I am, still the end result did not testify to my efforts and actually looked FUGLY. I ended up stripping it off and spent the rest of the day removing the goo and gunk it left on my iPod Video. I shudder to think - what if it had been a multi-touch surface? My advice to you is be very careful in removing the shield that covers the front part of your iPod Touch.

Yes, my finger glides on the screen just like Apple intended. It's available in clear and thick enough to protect. DecalGirl calls their clear as the Crystal Series and is available in either glossy or matte.

Oh, just to be 'clear' - I'm not pitching for DecalGirl because I'm connected with them. Am simply a satisfied customer.

That's good to know. Oh, no need to qualify your post. This is a regulated public forum and as far as I know, healthy comments are always welcome.

To each his own I guess. Though soloworx's mod is very cool (saw the rest of the designs at Decal Girl), I'll probably stick with something like Mad Mac's.

Great job guys!

Has anyone ever tried G Masking their ipod touch? (is this on another topic?) I've G Masked a cellphone and an iPod photo with good results. The mask scratches when brushed against something solid in my pocket, but the iPod is spared and that's what's important to me.

Thanks.

I guess that's why the BestSkinsEver film is sticky. It "heals". How is the thickness of GMask? What is its texture like?

bestskinever is way better than gmask. gmask is prone to scratch and in just months or weeks your gmask will have so many scratch that you want to remove it. i am using best skin ever in my iPhone. and its cheaper than gmasking or invisible shield. Best skin Ever is only 450 Pesos in their site.

My BestSkinsEver protected iPod Touch is feeling good now. It doesn't feel as tacky as when it was new. I guess the external plastic had some form of release agent that evaporates. Or my fingers are simply dirty. For whatever reason, it feels better.

CD-R King sells screen protector for iPod Touch for 80 pesos. The front screen guard covers the whole screen except the home button. The back screen guard covers 75% of the back part protecting the part with the text and logo and not the sides/edges. They also sell these cute skins (made of cheap material) for 50 pesos. At least it wouldn't be a big waste of money if ever you got bored of the design and decide to change it.

Here is a followup report. It's been a year and a half since I installed the Bestskinsever. The film was still pretty good and no lifting. I decided to reapply a fresh set only because dirt had accumulated on the edges. Since I had a spare set that came with the original set, I installed it.

The old film I removed had a yellowish hue because of age. Removal was easy and left no damage to the iPod OEM markings. The iPod Touch looked remarkably new! There was minimal glue residue that were easily rubbed off with the finger.

The 2nd set of film came on as before using water and shampoo. I laid the wet film on the iPod and used a credit card to squeeze of the fluid. Those parts of the film that wouldn't cling I left to dry over night. In the morning, some parts were stubborn and wouldn't stick. I plugged the iPod to the Mac to heat it up with normal standby use. A few hours later I was able to press down on the remaining film to finish the iPod. Done.

I got a Late 2009 iPod Touch and once again I installed BestSkinsEver. The film took 8 days to get here. With two installations before I now had experience applying the film. The back panel came on very well. After positioning the wet film, I squeezed some water off and then left the film to air dry for about 2 hours. After that the film easily adhered to the iPod as I pressed on them. I was surprised at how well the film adapted to the curved back panel. The front film was a no brainer. I positioned it and squeezed off fluid. Since it was flat it stuck almost instantly. Then came the button film. After blotting the fluid out it was set. I am very happy with the results. My new iPod Touch will be protected like my old one.
