What software do you use for converting movies to mp4? I'm using cucusoft video converter for windows. Its a good application but it takes a while to convert the videos... the time it takes to convert the movie is the same as watching the movie itself.. any other suggestions?

isquint here :D conversion time depends on your settings and length of the video. for 1 episode of a TV series around 350mb in size, it around 20 mins for me... it would also help if your processor is fast. Mine is just a G4

i ended up trying visual hub instead of iSquint & it converted 2 of my avi files to mp4 optimized for the ipod touch great & fast.

the screenshot posted by skinhead has been updated to include the ipod touch to the list. though i believe the video optimized resolution for both the iphone & itouch are the same, it still feels nice that the software is updated.

I've compared conversions of 700mb avi's by the highest quality iSquint and default quality QT Pro. QT Pro is much better, astounding sharpness, but takes way longer to convert. iSquint is about 145mb compared to QT pro's 290mb. QT takes about 5x longer but worth the wait for me.

Visual Dub is tops; high quality/almost perfect conversions, plus speed. Movies take only about 30 minutes, I think.

For PC/Windows, I use Super, but these days I just ferry files to my Mac to run through Visual Dub. It's that good for me...

Hi guys, i'm new to converting videos for the iPod. I tried using iSquint to convert a Simpsons Movie from the dvd itself. What i did was i drag dropped the video file from the Video_DTS folder (in the dvd) and converted it.

The problem is when i play the converted video in my computer, there's no audio. I didn't play around with the settings, just drag-dropped and converted. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot for your help!

in addition to suigeneris' question...

i used handbrake to convert a movie from dvd itself to mp4 format so i can load to my ipod nano. the first time i did it, it worked great.

then i had to restore my itunes settings from my previous computer and so overwrote the movie copy in itunes. so i tried to convert the dvd to mp4 again using handbrake and when i play the movie in itunes it's ok but when i try to sync it to the ipod nano, it won't sync and it says that the nano can;t play the file.

please help!

Para maiba, i use Zamzar free online file converter (for mac and windows). Zamzar supports conversion between a wide variety of different file formats (for video files, images, songs/tones, etc etc), for your ipod, psp, mobile devices, etc. All you have to do is click.

For the people who've been using iSquint, you must really try VisualHub.
The interface looks virtually the same (it's the same maker after all), but the quality is light years different.
Liked it so much I decided to pay for it. $20, not so bad, P800 lang. Very happy with it since.

am i the only person who uses Videoaa as my converter? hehe! it has a feature of downloading the youtube video and convert it automatically. Once you click youtube as your source, the program automatically becomes a browser that will redirect you to the youtube website and there will only be a button to click once you find the video you wish to convert and it will automatically download.

Also...

once any video is converted, either from a file, youtube or dvd, videora automatically put it in your itunes library aswell...

and the best thing is, it's FREE.

after reading through 12 pages....

there are some helpful suggestions, however, a lot of people considered speed of conversion, although that is a telling factor, i don't mind waiting 30-45mins to convert a TV episode...what i'm really after is quality on the iphone

with that in mind

can anyone suggest which converter gives the best quality? (i guess paying for it wouldn't be such a turn off if the product really is good)

for DVD's i've been using just the basic settings of handbrake (i converted from DVD "planet earth" and i was very impressed with the result), so maybe as far as DVD converting goes i'll probably stick to handbrake.

what i'm looking for i guess is a good converter for TV episodes that i've downloaded off the net, i just love downloading weekly episodes over the weekend, but i haven't found the time to keep up anymore so i was thinking of converting everything i have into iphone video files. mostly these files will consist of AVI files (which seems to be the standard for american TV shows uploaded on the net), anime series though are a bit trickier since they use diff types of files, although i try to find avi files if i have a choice. some of thse files are in fact mp4 files or h.264 files, but in much larger screen sizes, and i want to be able to convert them to the iphone's screen size to make the file sizes more managable

raypin
08-06-2008, 04:12 PM
garbage in = garbage out, regardless of how good the converter is. If you demand quality, start with a good source material and work yourself down to the settings that produces the best results for you. Any of the converters mentioned in this thread do quite well.

itunes downloaded TV shows and movies are excellent on the ipod/macs. There's nothing better but it takes quite a bit of space off the harddrive. But that should not be an issue at all since these can be deleted or replaced anytime. Personally, I just keep two or three movies on my iphone and are replaced as needed. There's no point in trying to cram a dozen movies.

The only other thing that I could think of to improve the experience is to upgrade your headsets or earbuds.

P.S. I use handbrake too. Its good enough for me to convert my original dvds.

I download local tv shows recorded in wmv format,I always get an out of sync A/V when used with videora and xilisoft in my PC.then I tried TVC total video converter, and it's now synced. In videora, the setting I used before doesn't work now in their latest versions.

i haven't tried any other software after using total video converter since i don't encounter any problem.. i recommend using it.. it's easy to use... you got options on what to convert your file like if it's for ipod, iphone or apple tv... you can also convert flv files to mp4 which is very useful..

hi guys.

I just want to share what I did, it might help some of you.

I built Handbrake from source last Dec 25, 2008 as there are some critical bugs in the 0.9.3 release, you can read about it here:

Hi guys, I just downloaded and used Handbrake to convert some dot-avi files for the 2G iPod touch... problem is, the length of the video seems to twice as long as the original and if you skim through the whole thing, the second half (or once the real video is over) is just all blank!

What should I do? Try iSquint or Visualhub? I only want to install one app though.

iSquint is just the little brother of Visualhub. but Visualhub had been discontinued so I don't know If you can still get it

Hi ricpac!

A friend of mine suggested I try total video converter. She just downloaded hers off the web. For the keygen, I think she got it from youtube or something. Been converting my movies for a month now and I haven't had any issues so far. You even get to choose quality settings. Me, I personally select the highest quality coz the vids are way too clearer especially when viewing them from an iPod.

Guys, can you please share where you downloaded Visual Hub and Handbrake? Some friends have been egging me to try those as well. It's just that I've been so used to using total video converter that I almost forgot about it. Thanks!

By the way, just mentioning as a reminder, since there's talk of downloading and keygens - piracy isn't condoned in philmug :)

UPDATE: The problem still persists. A 5-minute music vid in .avi format becomes a 10-minute clip when converted--all that using the "iPhone and iPod touch" preset on HandBrake. I am now trying just the normal preset but set H.264 as video codec. We'll see how this thing goes. I am not giving up on HandBrake just yet.

Hey Guys. I have a DVD that I want to convert to mp4. When I open it with iSquint I can see two folders. Audio and Video. Do I just drag that to convert it? There's a note that appears and says the folder can't be converted. Help please. Thanks.

you only need the .vob files, But I have not tried converting those with isquint, use handbrake or mactheripper instead.

When I use handbrake to convert .avi files to mp4 (iPod/iPhone friendly), the files created are not always imported into my device. iTunes would give me a warning that the files failed to get synched because of a format issue. I use to have iSquint (no problem with this little software), but I can no longer find a source from which I can download iSquint. The developers have already closed their book on iSquint.

better use handbrake then key in the presets for apple, either universal so it will be viewable in any apple format, or legacy, then choose what media you will use it for, i.e. apple tv, ipod, etc...
