This FAQ has been updated to 0.9 (as of February 15) and a separate (sticky) thread exists exclusively for all future updates.

For the sake of the mods and the newbies, I've decided to start an Unofficial PhilMUG iPhone FAQ. I've started with the obvious newbie questions first, let's do this as we go along. For now, I'll be the acting keeper of the FAQ, but if anyone wants to take over this role, I'll be glad to pass it on.

Just doing my part. Kakaawa na si Penmanila from wrangling all the newbies, and the newbies for not knowing where to go. :-)

The Unofficial Philmug iPhone FAQ 0.7
Addendum: State of the Unlock
September 30, 2007

What is the iPhone?

Go to www.apple.com/iphone (http://www.apple.com/iphone).

Is the iPhone available in the Philippines?

Officially, no.
Unofficially, there are some people who buy from the US and sell it here. Some gadgets stores also have it for sale.

As per Steve Job's Keynote address back in January 2007, the iPhone is coming to Asia in 2008.
As of this writing, there is no Philippine date and no Philippine telco identified to carry the iPhone.

Can I use the iPhone with Globe/Smart/Sun?

Officially, no. As of this writing, the iPhone is simlocked only to AT&T. There is no such thing as an openline iPhone.
Unofficially, yes, by unlocking it. According to Apple however, if you unlock it, it will void the warranty.

If I unlock the iPhone does it really work in the Philippines?

Yes it does. You can make & receive calls, send & receive text messages, just like any phone. With an internet connection (wifi or EDGE) you can use Safari, Mail, Maps, Weather and Stocks. With the proper hack, Youtube works too. And of course, the Camera, Photos, and iPod functions work great.

The only thing that doesn't work is Visual Voicemail, since it's an AT&T Exclusive thing. Expect this to be activated once the iPhone becomes officially available in the Philippines.

iPhones have been tested working with all three telcos, both prepaid and postpaid.

How do I unlock the iPhone?

As of this writing, there are three ways:

1. Software Unlock - available for a fee from iPhoneSIMFree retailers of for FREE using AnySim. With the right instructions, you can do this yourself. Google "AnySim iPhone". This is currently the easiest way to unlock the iPhone, and the cheapest if you use AnySim.
2. Hardware Unlock - VERY DANGEROUS, but possible. With the right instructions you can do this yourself. Google "iphone hardware geohot unlock"
3. SIM Unlock - very expensive way to unlock. You need to have special equipment to do this. DubEditions of Philmug was the first to do this in the Philippines, PM him if you want him to do it (Dubeditions, feel free to say if you want this part out).

There is an upcoming firmware update that is expected to stop your iPhone from working (aka make it into a "brick").
Method #1 is virtually guaranteed to brick your phone when the firmware comes out, unknown for Method #2 and #3.

Unlocking will allow you to use non AT&T SIMs.
Before unlocking the phone, you need to Activate it.

How do I activate the iPhone?

Two ways:
1. Activate using AT&T. You'll need to sign up for an AT&T plan. This is the official approved way to use the iPhone.
The phone will work but you'll be charged US rates at roaming costs. You can cancel the plan and the phone will stay activated.
2. Activate using third party apps. For Macs, try Independence (google iPhone Independence Activation). For PCs, try iBrickr (google iPhone iBricker)
A good tutorial on how to do this can be found at: http://www.hacktheiphone.com (http://www.hacktheiphone.com/).

You MUST activate the iPhone before you can unlock it. The third party apps use a technique called "JailBreak" that will allow you to modify the internals of the iPhone.

Even if you don't use AT&T an activated but not unlocked iPhone is still useful.... iPhone without a phone (no calls or SMS). You practically turn it into an iPod Touch with built in speakers, a camera, a calendar where you can add events, extra apps (stocks, weather, maps, etc) and longer battery life.

Tutorials on activating the iPhone said I need to download the iPhone firmware. It's taking a while to download. Should it take this long?

YES. The iPhone firmware image is a little over 90MB. Quite large. How fast you get it depends on your internet connection.

How do I install my SIM card?

http://www.maclife.com/article/how_t...phone_sim_card (http://www.maclife.com/article/how_to_remove_the_iphone_sim_card)

How do I install third party apps on the iPhone? How do I customize the logos and screens?

The easiest way is to use the AppTapp installer. Google "iphone apptapp." Once you've installed it on your iPhone, it will use wi-fi to install programs. Pretty easy to use.
Once you have it, use it to install SummerBoard and Customize, the two major iPhone mod programs.

Other ways to mod your phone at: http://www.modmyiphone.com (http://www.modmyiphone.com/).

Important note: AppTapp will only work on a jailbroken iPhone.

How do i put movies/videos/TV Shows on my iPhone?

Two ways:
1. The official way: get it from the iTunes Store. Buy it or watch out for free TV Shows. You'll need an iTunes account.
2. For those AVI/MPEG/MOV files you get outside of iTunes: you might need to convert it first. You can use the free program iSquint (http://www.isquint.org/) to do this.

My iPhone thinks +639XX-YYY-ZZZZ and 09XX-YYY-ZZZZ are two different numbers! How do I fix this?

This is a known bug of the current iPhone, which is configured for the US phone system, not international.
You can easily fix it by following the instructions in this thread. - http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=24810 (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=24810)

It's fair to guess that it'll be fixed in the upcoming firmware update, which will have international support.

My iPhone crashed/hanged/endelessly reboots/is now a brick. Where can I have it fixed in the Philippines?

There is currently NO SERVICE CENTER for the iPhone in this country. This is the great risk you need to be willing to accept if you use it here.

Having said that, the internet is a rich treasure trove of resources for working on your iPhone. Philmug has many threads to help you fix it.

As per request of the moderators, please do a search of the threads before posting your problem. The problem might already be solved and the answer already there, adding new threads that already exist will just make it hard for everyone. There are also a lot of good people in this forum who will help you if you ask nicely, but screaming for help without doing your research will just annoy people. ;)

Some iPhone in the Philippines Trivia...

Elbert Cuenca is the first known iPhone user in the Philippines. He activated his iPhone by signing up for an AT&T Prepaid Plan and then cancelled it. He couldn't use a local SIM at that time though, this was before the unlock was discovered. More info in this thread (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=23202).

Dubeditions is the first known iPhone user who successfully made the iPhone work on a Philippine Telco. More info on this thread (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=24513).

The first Philippine iPhone Meet was held in September 1, 2007. Based on the photos, 8 people showed up with iPhones (for the people who were there, please feel free to say how many actually showed up). Details of the meet can be found here (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=24859). Photos of the meet can be found here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/10966462@N02/sets/72157601806437741/).

As of this writing, there are more than 50 PhilMuggers who are using the iPhone. You can find the roll call here. (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=23086)
There are most likely more iPhones in the Philippines than in this roll call.

For further reading, you can check out an iPhone review from our very own Butch Dalisay - http://homepage.mac.com/jdalisay/blo...l#psk210389160 (http://homepage.mac.com/jdalisay/blog/MyBlog.html#psk210389160)

Special note: This FAQ is not intended to be a complete, detailed, repository for all things iPhone. Think of it as a starting point and to answer important, urgent and the TRULY frequently asked questions, especially focused on the Philippine setting. Whenever possible, specific detailed instructions will be linked to rather than listed here. If you have any suggestions for improving this FAQ, all feedback is welcome. Salamat!

The new iPhone firmware 1.1.1 has been released! Should I update?

If you have an unhacked iPhone working with an AT&T line - you can, but you'll lose all third party apps.
You'll get some new stuff though, like the iTunes WiFi Store.
You can see what else is in the new firmware (documented & undocumented) here (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?p=264166#post264166).

If you have an activated and unlocked iPhone - you could, but it'll BRICK YOUR PHONE! Don't do it!

Oh no, I've updated to 1.1.1 and it's now a brick! Can I bring it back to life?

YES! BREAKING NEWS: A bricked 1.1.1 iPhone can now be resurrected!
Instructions here: http://www.iphonealley.com/news/breaking-downgrades-from-v1-1-1-are-possible
Or here: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/breaking/how-to-unbrick-a-bricked-unlocked-iphone-the-jesusphone-has-resuscitated-305230.php

For those with your AT&T iPhones, you can use this method to revert to 1.0.2, allowing you to use third party apps!
This is good news for those who buy brand new iPhones which come with 1.1.1!

Can I activate/unlock a 1.1.1 iPhone?

Activate only through AT&T. At present, no way to unlock a 1.1.1 phone.
If you want to unlock/activate it with third party apps, you must revert to 1.0.2.

Can I keep my unlocked iPhone on 1.0.2?

YES. Updating to 1.1.1 is an option, you are not forced to update.

I need to restore my unlocked iPhone. Can I restore it to 1.0.2 with out updating to 1.1.1?

YES. In iTunes, for Macs, Option-Click the Restore Button, for Windows, Shift-Click the Restore Button.
This will allow you to install previous versions of the firmware.

Thanks Leo! I've been saving and bookmarking all the iPhone how-tos in preparation for my very soon to come Jesus Phone. This FAQ just makes it easier to use as a guide especially with the actual experiences of local iPhone users and where to run to or who to call in case you made yourself a very expensive paper weight.

Thanks for all the feedback! What I found interesting was that I was able to do this quickly. I guess whenever I have a friend who checks out my iPhone, i seem to say all the same things. Just put it down to paper with some enhancements.

To tell you the truth, the reason I started this was all the explosion of threads last night that PenManila had to keep managing. Figured a one-stop shop for quick info might be worth it.

Hey gang, was going to update the FAQ to include the new firmware but for some reason, I've lost the Edit Post function on the first post.
I can edit this one though.

Hi Leo, the discussion board automatically disables editing for regular member accounts after a certain period of time.

Just keep posting the new version of the FAQ as a reply to this thread and I will move it to the top myself when I get the chance.

Thanks.

taken from iliketomac post re: unlocking the iphone

NOTE: This is for firmware 1.0.2 DO NOT TRY this on firmware 1.1.1 !!!!!

"From google-ing and researching on the web... be careful though, read & do your homework - not all methods are guaranteed to work - sometimes it's just a case by case basis... of course, there are other sites, links, and mirrors out there.... but these are some of the most used ones from activation to unlocking, etc...

WIndows & some Mac users can use this:
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5883 (Mac)
http://www.freeiphoneunlock.com/unlock/ (User-Friendly GUI Version)
http://modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.ph...iPhone_iUnlock
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5799 (Submitted by compuguy1088)
http://www.freeiphoneunlock.com/guide/ (Submitted by KYBOSH)
http://iphone.unlock.no/ <--- currently & likely one of the most reliable method (if manually done)

Most Mac users simplify & can just use this:
http://modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.php/IPhone_unlock_OS_X_Part_1 "

For newbies like me... this is a great reference in learning how to unlock the iphone :)

I was wondering, if and when the iPhone becomes official here in the Phils., can those with unofficially unlocked iPhones be "converted" to official iPhones? Meaning, will a future software update make the iPhone officially locked to a local telco?

Just this clarification,

the iphone can either be unlocked or its sim cloned. my brother who recently got one says it would be better to have the sim cloned because software downloads from apple would be disabled if they are unlocked. is this true? has anyone experienced that?

Mods, thanks for updating the first post with the 0.7 FAQ Addendum. I noticed we took out the other questions on 0.6. Maybe we can put 0.6 and 0.7 together for the meantime?

I would merge them together, but as I've said in my PMs, it wasn't easy. Salamat!

I was searching around multiple forums for a solution to a certain problem I have and came upon this FAQ. The poster's name looked very familiar and I think I know him from BBS days. Hello thar, leo.. this is Roderick, also a fellow iPhone user. :)

Anyway I might as well post my problem here in case anyone had encountered it before. The personal SIMs I'm using is a retailer's SIM that can be used for electronic loading. I already carry around 2 phones and I'd hate to have to get another sim for this iPhone. I just want to replace one of my phones. The problem is in the reloading function. It works, but there's no confirmation whatsoever. When I reload myself, I usually get 2 notifications: one for the source, and one for the destination. Both don't make it to my phone. I believe it has something to do with the type of SMS being sent as a confirmation, one which you can't reply to, even on other phones. I was searching for a tweak to allow this type of message to be received, but no luck so far.

You need to have Installer.app and install the "kb" application. This would put an option to turn of the autocorrect feature under Settings->General->Keyboard->Enable Autocorrection[On/Off]

Salamat!

Hi Mojako, that's a good question. I would say there's a high probability they are.
They stopped making 4GB iPhones a month ago, making it likely they still have 1.02 firmware.

This is just speculation though, don't know this for sure. :-)

Hi Leo,

First of all, salamat for the helpful FAQ. My question is on this entry:

If you have an unhacked iPhone working with an AT&T line - you can, but you'll lose all third party apps.
You'll get some new stuff though, like the iTunes WiFi Store.

Question: What if i choose not to activate my 1.1.1 iPhone? Can I still update? I guess the question here is, what's the advantage of activating AT&T (apart from those you've already mentioned).

TIA!

I noticed that my iPhone internet connection is slow. Using my wifi at home, I usually get more or less 200kbps but my computer logs more than 500kbps. I am not using encryption. My phone is still locked and use only iPod Touch functions.

Any ideas?

Edited: Works now. Solution? I just went to the CR and surfed from there!

LeoCastillo
10-09-2007, 12:10 PM
Cyptonomicon, I'm not sure what you mean... activating a 1.1.1iPhone via AT&T is the only available reliable way right now. There are reports of a 1.1.1 jailbreak today, but it's still not ready for prime time. Wait a few days.

Bottom line, unless you want the iTunes WiFi store and willing to lose your third party apps, DON'T UPDATE TO 1.1.1. Especially if you have an unlocked phone! There is currently no easy way to unlock a 1.1.1 iPhone!

Leo

P.S. Blacksocks, congrats on finding a solution. Wifi while you wii! :-)

hi.

is there another way to discover new applications for the iphone? instead of installer.app? like in the web?

been trying to find a bible for the iphone, usually its web based, that you can click on using the iphone's safari. thats all...

any sites to go to and download it to your computer, then load it via ssh?

thanks!

Hi Johann, Installer.App is just the easiest way to find and install apps. There are other iPhone apps available, some which you'll need to install yourself (not an expert on this one). Just google "iphone apps".

You can find a bible then load it into Books.app, or into a local text/html file which you put in the iphone via ssh and do a local link (again, not an expert here). There should be many tutorials on how to do this on the web.

I think I also saw a bible in one of the WeDict files, available also under Installer.App.

Good luck!

Adding Ringtones

Using ssh go to /var/root/Library/Ringtones folder and stick whatever ringtones you want into that folder. There’s no need to access system files. You can do it all from the public directories.

then select the ringtones that you want in Settings>Sounds>Ringtone

I'm no expert but I recently bought an iPhone and unlocked it by myself (2 days ago to be exact). The iPhone (in its sealed box) already has an AT&T SIM card. You don't have to buy a separate SIM Card just to activate it.

I hope this helps.

am getting a bit confused. i just arrived this morning from the States with an iphone. how exactly did you activate the iphone, karl184? do I just download most recent itunes and connect the iphone to activitate? then do an unlock after? my understanding from reading this thread is that because I have a new iphone, I assume that I have 1.1.1 installed. so i need to activate the iphone first using att sim which is inside the phone. afterwhich, i unlock phone. is that the procedure?

You really need to read up a lot to catch up. It's intimidating but I learned something new.

For your situation, since you have a new in the box 1.1.1 version.. here's your steps in a nutshell.

1. Download Independence 1.2.4 (google the files to find 'em)

- Activate
- Jailbreak
- Install SSH (required to get access to the phone's operating system)

2. Download AnySim 1.1.1 (ditto, it's easy to find).

You then unpack it and use Independence's Customize command to upload the anysim program into the iPhone (Applications > User >). Once it's in the phone... run it and it's done.

Don't mess with anything else that says downgrading firmware or baseband because you have a virgin phone which will theoretically be the easiest to unlock. It's those who have jumped through a lot of hoops with other unlocking methods that need to do the more complicated stuff.

Once you complete the sequence needed by the aforementioned programs, do some backreading on the following topics...

installer.app - for adding 3rd party programs

Once you get installer.app in your iPhone, it's all pretty much easy.

Make sure you have a working wifi setup where you plan to unlock though, best without security first so that the iPhone can get on your wifi as unimpeded as possible.

To be fair, I did brick my phone the first time I attempted it (dumb enough to run anysim more than once), luckily there's some great muggers in this forum who were willing to help me out of the jam I got myself in.

Good Luck.

With this method, are there any applications which will not work? So many talk floating around about itunes not syncing or youtube not working, etc. Is there a definite list of what will not work? I will have virgin new firmware iPhones arriving soon.

Explaining my question further: Question: What if i choose not to activate my 1.1.1 iPhone? Can I still update [to future software upgrades]? I guess the question here is, what's the advantage of activating AT&T (apart from those you've already mentioned).

I have a 1.1.1 iPhone and I don't want to unlock it. I am aware that activating via ATT is the only way. You answered part of my Q correctly when you said that if I don't activate the phone feature, I will not be able to use iTunes WiFi store.

Let me refine the Q. If I don't activate the phone feature (and therefore if I also don't unlock it and I just use it as an iPod/glorified conversation piece)...

* Can I still use WiFi at all?
* Can I then install software upgrades beyond 1.1.1?

Hey Cryptonomicon, wow, you replied to a really old post that I wrote almost two weeks ago. :-)
A lot of things have happened since then!

As I said in that old post, wait a few days. It's now more than a few days. Bottomline:

YES, you can activate a 1.1.1 iPhone now without AT&T! It is no longer the only way.
YES, you can unlock it now so it will work with any GSM sim.

And to answer your new questions:

YES you can use wifi.
Future upgrades? Unknown. Although it is likely future updates will be cracked as well.

Search around this forum to learn how to crack 1.1.1.
I'm still very swamped with work these days, will update the FAQ when I find time next week.
I wanted to wait first till Independence, Anysim and Apptapp can work with 1.1.1 anyway.... expect a new Unofficial iPhone FAQ v0.9 very soon.

Enjoy!

with all the iphone posts that fill the iPhone forums I'm not sure what to do when I get my iPhone on Monday. I'm sure it is still v1.0.2 as I bought it over a month ago (have to wait for my friend to come back from the US).

Anyway, I think I'm sure I could unlock it with the current FAQ from Leo for v1.0.2 but then Leo just confirmed v.1.1.1 is unlockable but checking the other threads I read different versions. I don't read the iPhone threads that often as I think it's a 'crazy' world for iPhone users for now with the Today's Post filled with almost anything iPhone.

I hope Leo gets a free time during the weekends  so I could prep up my gears here come Monday or I'll have to spend the weekend sorting out the various iPhone v1.1.1 unlock steps. Or, just request the guru's to have it updated to v1.1.1 and unlock it :)

Hi jmkerr12,

Welcome to PhilMUG! We will appreciate it if you can also take time to read through the many iPhone threads discussing available stocks and their corresponding firmware versions. Here at PhilMUG, we encourage that you SEARCH first before you post your question because it is likely that your question has been answered already.

Anyway, if you are going to buy the iPhone from an Apple Store in the US, I am certain that you will get a 1.1.1 unit. If you buy it from local sellers here in the forum, you can probably still get hold of 1.0.2 version. In any case, with the recently released guides in the internet, firmware version is currently a non-issue. Just buy a brand new one and I am pretty sure it can be unlocked/activated here.

Hope this helps.

sirs, pasensya na medyo nalilito lang ako, ill be getting an unlocked 1.1.1 out of the box version of the iphone, does this mean na activated na ang youtube and mail application nito and i can easily install app.tapp ? or di pa talaga pwede ang apptap sa 1.1.1?

is this right? An unlocked 1.1.1 iphone cannot be installed with 3rd party apps like apptapps through windows?

Is this right? you can have 3rd party apps, by restoring an unlocked 1.1.1 to locked 1.1.1 then downgrade to 1.02 , then install app.tapp then update to 1.1.1

Pardon my ignorance medyo nalilito na ko sa mga posts e. i'll be having an iphone 1.1.1 unlocked pero i think walang 3rd party apps pa na nakainstall.

So what should i do to install 3rd party apps if i got an unlocked 1.1.1 version of the iphone?

Neither of the unlocks by the Dev Team nor the iPhone Elite Team will turn your phone into a 1.1.1. Only an upgrade or restore (via iTunes) would do that. What AnySIM will do, regardless of who's version, is unlock your 1.1.1 or 1.0.2 iPhone.

Still working on the new unofficial iPhone FAQ (busy with Leopard!) but for now....

YES, you can unlock a 1.1.1 iPhone.
YES, you can run apps on a 1.1.1 iPhone.

There are two easy ways to jailbreak an iPhone 1.1.1.
Method One: Use latest Indepedence. Downgrade it first to 1.0.2, once it's there pre-prepare it at 1.0.2, then update to 1.1.1. Activated! Use AnySim to unlock, use Independence to install AppTapp Installer

Method Two: Use the newly announced AppSnapp system via jailbreakme.com. Just follow the instructions to bypass the emergency number, activate wifi and connect to jailbreakme.com. From there it will jailbreak your phone and install AppTapp installer. No need to downgrade.

ENJOY!!!

Sorry if you have been asked this question before.

I have an new iphone 1.0.2 that still needs to be activated.

I want to upgrade it to 1.1.1 THEN UNLOCK it. What are my options to do this?

- I can unlock my 1.0.2 using Anysim but how do I upgrade to 1.1.1?

- Do I activate using iBrickr then upgrade to 1.1.1 then use the new apptapp jailbreakme.com method?

are there other methods?
Thanks
nino

Hi Nino, you can upgrade it to 1.1.1 using iTunes and then use JailBreakMe.com to activate.
Once there, use Installer to get AnySim, use it to Unlock. Voila!

This should be the fastest and simplest way to do it.
You can also try Independence on the Mac but it'll take longer.
Not that familiar with iBricker, i think Jailbreakme is still faster and easier.

Hi gagu,
Yes, you do need help ;)

Anyway, looking at your past posts, there are 2 versions of summerboard, one for 1.0.2. and one for 1.1.1. There are both available via installer.app. If you are on 1.0.2 and you try to install the 1.1.1 version, installer.app won't let you. Hope this helps.

There are a number of people in PhilMUG who can help you with your iPhone upgrade/unlock for a reasonable fee. Last I checked someone charges P800 for this service, not that bad. Maybe this is an option? Search around and I'm sure you'll find it. :-)

Gagu, try turning off the phone by pressing the wake/sleep button (the one on top of the iphone) for more than 3 seconds. The iPhone will turn off. Turn it on again by holding the wake/sleep button.

If that doesn't work, try a reset. Press the Home Key and the Wake Key. See if that works.

Hi JMKerr, welcome to PhilMUG.

To learn how to fix the caller ID problem, follow this thread :
http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=24810&highlight=caller+iphone

It's pretty simple to fix. If you know how to SFTP to your iPhone, you can do it in less than two minutes.
Make sure you use the instructions for 1.1.1. Good luck!

I have an OTB, 1.1.2, iTunes 7.5, etc. Just tried the activation. That is all I am wanting. I do not want to unlock the phone. I have AT&T, and just want to use the sim from my old phone without having to sign another contract- besides, it is my wife's line that is eligible for renewal.

Somewhere, and I cannot find it, is a step by step way to get the iphone to activate by downgrading the firmware. I would rather not, but if I have to, does someone have a step by step way of doing this? I have the activation steps through jailbreakme pretty much memorized, but it does not work with 1.1.2 yet.

I am fairly good with my computer, but only with simple steps. So any help will be appreciated.

I tried that. It wants you to go back to 1.0.2 and then upgrade to 1.1.2. I am sorry, but I must be dumb. followed their instructions, but it did not work. I followed all the instructions and now I have the phone activated under 1.1.1. Basically, I have a ipod touch. No service. Aptapp is installed. I don't know where to go from there. I tried to use a program from that listing of applications, but it did not work. I thought about going through Springboard, but I cannot find it anywhere in Aptapp.

If you have a jailbroken and activated 1.1.1, simply install OktoPrep. After that, upgrade to 1.1.2 then apply the 1.1.2 jailbreak (link provided by courtside). Of course, you will not have any service still after that as you should be using the SIM that came with the phone. You cannot unlock an OTB 1.1.2 as of yet. The baseband's new bootloader would prevent you from doing any modification to the baseband/modem.

spiritualquest
11-21-2007, 07:28 AM
So, then I will have to wait for that jailbreak possibility? I won't be able to slide my old AT&T sim in and use it? OktoPrep just allows me to upgrade to 1.1.2?

But it does not allow me to use any sim I want?

@spiritualquest

OTB 1.1.2 has a has a different bootloader for the baseband. No hacks to date has been developed to bypass that. You can downgrade the OS (to either 1.1.1, 1.0.2, 1.0.1, or 1.0.0) and have access to the non-phone functions. But you cannot touch the baseband even if you have the 1.1.2 secpack. A TurboSIM solution might be possible for you though.

turn off "dim wallpaper" on smbprefs/summerboard

No unlock method is available yet for OTB 1.1.2 iPhones. This is because of the new bootloader (4.6) that these new iPhones have. However, you can still activate and jailbreak your OTB 1.1.2 iPhone to use it just like an iPod Touch. Hope this helps.

As far as I know, sir shag3doo, you need to go to 1.1.1 so you can run OktoPrep.

Update: Apparently, there are reports -- unconfirmed -- that you can run OktoPrep in 1.0.2. If true, you can update directly to 1.1.2, and then run anySIM 1.2.1u while on Airplane Mode.

My wife bought an iPhone about 2 weeks ago. Its running a Firmware version 1.0.2 (C28). I don’t what upgrades or hacks (jailbreak, independence) were done on the phone. But the “Installer” application is already installed on the phone.

Based on the fist post, upgrading to 1.1.1 firmware would brick your phone. But after reading through this thread, its OK to upgrade to 1.1.1

So, is it OK to upgrade to the latest firmware version 1.1.2?

Do I loose data like SMS, Calendar Notes and Appointment/Schedule, Photo?

Thanks in advance for replying to my inquiry.

The older anySIM could've been used to unlock the unit. So you might need to virginize the iPhone first before upgrading to 1.1.1, and then to 1.1.2.

Ladies and gentlemen, the new and updated Unofficial iPhone FAQ.
I'm working with the other mods to have this be the first post. Expect to see it there soon (hopefully).

================================================== ====

The Unofficial Philmug iPhone FAQ 0.8
Life after 1.1.2 - November 24, 2007

PART 1 - General Information

What is the iPhone?

Go to www.apple.com/iphone (http://www.apple.com/iphone).

Is the iPhone available in the Philippines?

Officially, no.
Unofficially, there are some people who buy from the US and sell it here. Some gadgets stores also have it for sale.

In Steve Job's Keynote address back in January 2007, he mentioned that the iPhone is coming to Asia in 2008.
As of this writing, there is no Philippine date and no Philippine telco identified to carry the iPhone.
There are many rumors but all unconfirmed.

Can I use the iPhone with Globe/Smart/Sun?

Officially, no. As of this writing, the iPhone is simlocked only to AT&T in the US, Orange in France, O2 in the UK and T-Mobile in Germany.

The only thing that doesn't work is Visual Voicemail, since it's an AT&T/Orange/O2/Tmobile Exclusive thing.
Expect this to be activated once the iPhone becomes officially available in the Philippines.

iPhones have been tested working with all three telcos, both prepaid and postpaid.

PART 2 - Unlocking the iPhone

Great! So how do I unlock the iPhone?

Not so fast. First, we need to check if it is possible to unlock it.

The latest version of the iPhone has a new bootloader (version 4.6) that prevents it from being unlocked.
As of this writing, there is no way to unlock an iPhone with a 4.6 bootloader. Sorry folks!!!

OH NO! So how do I find out if my iPhone cannot be unlocked?

The hard way. You need to downgrade your iPhone to 1.1.1, activate it, load a program called bbupdater in your iphone and see the results.
Details for the hard way can be found at hacktheiphone.com.

The fast way. Check the iPhone's serial number, specifically the 4th & 5th digit. If it's 41 and below, then it doesn't have the new bootloader... you can unlock it.
If it is 45 and above, it definitely has the bootloader, meaning it cannot be unlocked. If it's 42-44, then it's tricky. You'll need to do the hard way to find out.

So I've confirmed that my iPhone does have the new bootloader. Is there really no way to unlock it?

YES, as of this writing, there is absolutely no way to unlock a 4.6 bootloader iPhone.
Your road ends here. You've been voted out of the tribal council. You are the last team to arrive.

You can however, ACTIVATE it but not unlock it... meaning you can use it as a slightly more expensive iPod Touch, but with built in speakers, bluetooth, better earphones and better battery life.

You can't use any SIM card with it though, only AT&T/O2/T-Mobile/Orange SIMs will work.
Activation is done through a process called JAILBREAK. To learn how to activate/jailbreak, go to hacktheiphone.com.

Sorry folks. Wait till the hackers figure it out.... someday.... we hope.

My iPhone has firmware 1.0/1.0.1/1.1.1/1.1.2, can it be unlocked?

All iPhones, whatever firmware is has, can be ACTIVATED. Only phones without the bootloader can be UNLOCKED.
The firmware is no longer what prevents you from unlocking your phone, it's the new 4.6 boot loader.
Again, there is no way to unlock a 4.6 bootloader phone. If your iPhone doesn't have the bootloader, whatever the firmware, it can be unlocked.

YAY! I've confirmed that my iPhone is unlockable, how do I unlock it?

Great! Go to hacktheiphone.com. There are complete detailed instructions there on how to do it.
Make sure you check what firmware you have, and find the matching instructions for it.

Even though we'd like to put all the info here, the information changes often, especially when an easier way becomes available.
In recognition of the work of the people from hacktheiphone.com, it'll be best if you visit them instead.
They're relatively easy to follow. If you know how to format and install a hard drive, you would have enough tech skills to do it.

As an alternative, there are many people in PhilMUG who can do it for you for a reasonable fee. Just go and search the forums for "iphone unlocking".

Tutorials on activating the iPhone said I need to download the iPhone firmware. It's taking a while to download. Should it take this long?

YES. The iPhone firmware image quite large, more than 90MB. How fast you get it depends on your internet connection.

PART 3 - Using the iPhone

How do I install my SIM card?

http://www.maclife.com/article/how_t...phone_sim_card (http://www.maclife.com/article/how_to_remove_the_iphone_sim_card)

How do I install third party apps on the iPhone? How do I customize the logos and screens?

The easiest way is to use the AppTapp installer. It might already be installed on your iPhone if you unlocked it.
If not, then google "iphone apptapp." Once you've installed it on your iPhone, it will use wi-fi to install programs. Pretty easy to use.
Once you have it, use it to install SummerBoard and Customize, the two major iPhone mod programs.

Other ways to mod your phone at: http://www.modmyiphone.com (http://www.modmyiphone.com/).

Using the onscreen keyboard is so hard to use! Did I make a mistake?

Guess what? Some people find the onscreen keyboard quite hard to use... the first day.
By the second day, users are doing less errors.By the third day, it gets easy.
By the fourth day, you don't even think about it anymore. Yes, there is a learning curve, but you'll quickly get over it.

Note that you barely hear any complaints about the keyboard from long time users, it's only coming people who've touched it the first few times.
Don't worry. It's just like driving. Once you get the hang of it, it's effortless.

Great video quality. :-)

How do I forward SMS?

You can't. Maybe in a future update... hopefully.

How do I send group SMS?

You can't. Maybe in a future update... hopefully.

How do I send or receive biz cards/files/photos/sync via bluetooth?

You can't. Maybe in a future update... hopefully.

How do i output video to my TV?

You need to have at least version 1.1.1 on your iPhone and get the new dock and video cable.
Only the new dock and video connector from Apple will work. Your old cable, even if it's from Apple, will NOT work.

How do I delete everything in the iPhone?

From the Home Screen, click the Settings icon.
Go to General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings.

Do I need to put a screen protector on my iPhone?

Do you NEED to? Short answer is NO.

The long answer: the iPhone's screen is optical quality glass, not plastic like all the other PDAs, phones, and even laptops out there.
There have been no documented case of any scratches on an iPhone that could've been prevented by a screen protector.
Of course, some would rather be safe than sorry, and so may want to... even if they don't need to.

More info in this discussion here: http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=28214

PART 4 - Troubleshooting

My iPhone thinks +639XX-YYY-ZZZZ and 09XX-YYY-ZZZZ are two different numbers! How do I fix this?

This is a known bug of the current iPhone, which is configured for the US phone system, not international.
You can easily fix it by following the instructions in this thread. - http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=24810 (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=24810)

[img src="file:///wink.gif" alt="wink.gif"]

Ok, so there is no service center and I need to try to fix it. My iPhone crashed/hanged/rebooted. What can i try?

For your own quick troubleshooting, try this using this sequence. Go to the next step only when the first one doesn't work.

QUICK AND DIRTY IPHONE TROUBLESHOOTING:

Step 1: Press the Home Button for a long time. It should "force quit" your current app and bring you to the Home Screen.
Still a problem? Go to step 2.

Step 2: Press the Wake/Sleep Button for a long time. The red slider to turn off your iPhone should appear.
Slide it, your iPhone will turn off. Press the Wake/Sleep Button for a long time. The Apple logo will show up, wait for your iPhone to reboot.
Still a problem? Try step 3.

Step 3: Press BOTH Home and Wake/Sleep for a long time. This should "force reboot" your iPhone.
Release the buttons once the Apple logo shows up. Wait for your iPhone to reboot.

Still a problem? Then you're in major dire straits. You'll need help.

One thing you can try is to go into recovery mode. WARNING: Doing so may re-lock your iPhone.
You'll need to activate/unlock it again, possibly even downgrade it or eve re-virginize it. Use this ONLY as a last resort.

RECOVERY MODE: Press Home and Wake/Sleep for a long time. DO NOT release when the Apple Logo appears. It'll disappear again, and the Apple Logo will appear a second time. The iPhone will now tell you to connect it to iTunes. iTunes will now restore your iPhone.

PART 5 - iPhone in the Philippines Trivia

As of this writing, there are more than 150 PhilMuggers who are using the iPhone. You can find the roll call here. (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=23086)
Now that the iPhone can be found in Greenhills, there are definitely more iPhones in the Philippines than in this roll call.

Salamat!

The older anySIM could've been used to unlock the unit. So you might need to virginize the iPhone first before upgrading to 1.1.1, and then to 1.1.2.

What would happen if I didn't virginize the iPhone?

Also, when upgrading can I not do it directly or jump from 1.0.2 to 1.1.2?

Since you don't know what unlock application was used, sir JMV, you really do need to virginize your wife's iPhone first in order to undo any changes to the baseband firmware.

As to your second question, there have been reports of successful upgrades to 1.1.2 directly from 1.0.2. If you plan to do the same, don't forget to prepare your wife's iPhone for the upgrade by running OktoPrep.

i can't seem to be able to get past the upgrade to 1.1.1

here are the steps i made so far:

1. i've downgraded it to 1.0.2 using ibricker
2. used Independence on mac to jailbreak, activate, install anysim, and run the pre 1.1.1 firmware upgrade
3. updated the firmware using itunes to 1.1.1
here's where i always get stuck
4a. tried independence but i think i can't activate 1.1.1
4b. jailbreakme.com method seems to be not working for me here in singapore (probaby coz the whole starhub subscribers are behind a proxy)
4c. used independence to unlock - i get some response here but it still won't activate
- using this method i went to jailbreak.toc2rtc.com and run the tiff exploit. (this is it right? not like jailbreakme.com where it installs apptapp rightaway?)

now i'm stuck with activation for 1.1.1

just to add. I tried the jailbreakme.com method but it just crashes my safari and goes to activate screen and does nothing. after almost a min. the screen turns off(sleep) i checked the settings auto-lock is set to 'Never'

Thanks for the quick replies.
I have additional questions.

If ever I tried to directly upgrade to 1.1.2 and not succeed, would I loose my data? or turn my phone to brick?

edvelarde
11-24-2007, 03:38 PM
yes.. because if ou brick it you need to restore it again ehich in this case it will erase all content.. but you can restore it back if the phone is already synced in itunes.. :)

v1.1.2 UNOFFICIAL Change Log
The following changes have been observed after upgrading to the new v1.1.2

Faster and smoother operatability, you don't feel the lag anytime during a screen change
Apps, including 3rd party, respond to functions must faster.
95% of the Apps for v1.1.1 work (they all haven't been tested yet)
The volume of the speakers is more louder and does not tear the speaker on high volumes or pitch sounds.
The International support with AppSupport makes it now possible to: Receive service SMS's from banks and other operators which are now readable without the gabbled text
The Caller ID works without mentioning the country code before the number in the Address Book.
VM Notification now works! (Concurrent problem with Rogers and Fido customers)
Processing speed and bus frequency of the processor has been bumped up to 412 MHz CPU Freq. and a 103 MHz Bus Freq. (Originally 400 MHz CPU Freq. and a 100 MHz Bus Freq in v1.1.1). This is documented by SysInfo
MUCH BETTER Battery Management : -- Wi-Fi life is improved as it now switches into a less power hungry standy mode
- New standby modes for EDGE and Wi-Fi. EDGE standby icon indicates a blue block instead of "E" and Wi-Fi standy icon indicates grey signal strength instead of blue. In turn, the iPhone now searches for EDGE or Wi-Fi only when prompted by the user (opening Safari, Youtube, etc).
When entering a password, the shift key acted as CAPS LOCK in 1.1.1. This has been fixed.
When you turn off the phone and turn it back on, it goes straight to the home screen instead of the slider screen.
A smooth transition is noticed when switching between the Album cover screen and list screen in iPod.
Photo Library being a lot smoother, faster scrolling through pictures.
Removed the extra 'Contacts' option from Settings.http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16880

Thought this might be of some use :)

Hi quick25.

Your procedure is slightly different. In your step 3, jailbreak.jar should be run after you've already upgraded to 1.1.2. But since you were able to install AnySIM, I guess your method kinda worked.

Your phone losing sound and WiFi is a CommCenter issue.

Anyway, you can try to force the phone boot. Run iPhoneInterface and type the commands...
setenv auto-boot true
saveenv
fsboot

After a few seconds, your phone should show you the activate screen. You could pick up from there and retry.

You can iphoneinterface is one of the executables in the iBrickr package. If you're on a MAC, you can use iPHUC but you would have to add "cmd " ahead of the commands (e.g., cmd setenv auto-boot true).

yes, and not only that, you may have to completely re-flash the baseband in order to get rid of the wrong IMEI error. it happened to my friend's iPhone and i had to go through the tedious process of running Unix (terminal) commands to resurrect his iPhone. but it can be done. i tell you, the iPhone is virtually indestructible! ;)

Try to run iBrickr. It will detect the phone in Recovery Mode. Click the "Try to Boot" link. If you get a red screen, then you're good. Just wait and you'll be at the SpringBoard in a shoert while. If you get a green screen on your phone, you really need to do another recovery.

as of date of this post, the answer is yes. all US, UK, Germany, and France iPhones selling right now (dec. 23, 2007) ship with FW 1.1.2 and Bootloader 4.6 which can be used locally thru StealthSIM (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=29500) or Turbo/Silver/SuperSIM. Your total cost for an iPhone that has all features unleashed would be only around P23-P25K (P18,000 US iPhone + cost of SilverSIM or StealthSIM), which is much lower than the price unlocked iPhones are selling right now in the country (27-35K).

So to answer your question again, Yes, your brother can just go to an apple store and get you one. Unless firmware 1.1.3 or higher is released before you buy. But even when 1.1.3 or higher comes out, you'll still be able to use your iPhone. You'll just have to wait for the activation and jailbreak hack to come out (no need to wait for unlocking software to come out anymore if you're using a SIM solution and not a software unlock).

Hope that clarifies.

If the phone has been already unlocked, It should work with any carriers around the world. Regarding your question about where can you go to have your iPhone modded, that I leave the answer to our colleagues who are currently located in Metro Manila area. Anyway, if you buy an iPhone here , more often than not, they are already unlocked and modded. :)

hi, i was just given an iphone with a week 51 serial number. based on my readings, this cant be unlocked. unfortunately, i'll have to settle with a very pricey paper weight unless i jailbreak it to use it as an ipod.. will there be possible problems if a software has been hacked and i decide to unlock it? would you recommend for me to simply wait for the software or is it ok to use it as an ipod for now? also, what are the pros and cons of using turbosim and the likes? thanks!

Hmm, I should update the FAQ soon.

Ok. iPhone with week 45 onwards can be jailbreaked to work as an iPod. To make it work as a phone , you need a SIM hack solution.
Search around the forums and you'll see people offering the service.

Device wise, there is no problems associated with jailbreaking an iPhone... it's just like driving. As long as you follow the guidelines you'll do fine.
A good place to start is hackthatphone.com. Try the instructions here: http://www.hackthatphone.com/112/iphone_jailbreak_112_nonUS_mac.html

adding and removing of music to your iphone is all done under itunes... when you click your iphone under devices, click the "systems tab" you will find the 2nd option in there that says "sync songs that has check mark" whatever... put a check mark on that one and after that go to your itunes music library, just put a check mark on all the songs that you want to add to your iphone.. and sync.... hth

as most people here would tell you, use the search function.

anyway, there's a program that you can use to send multiple sms', its name is smsd under network. about rearranging your icons, you can consider using customize/categories/summerboard they got themes and it does give you the option to customize your iphones' look. all of those apps are found in installer.

you don't need to update your phone for those features and it wouldn't be a good idea as well.

Hi! A newbie ere but a long time Mac user. Tried searching but couldn't find anything RE: a question I have about iPhone's SMS function.

I HATE using my reading glasses just to read SMS. This is the reason why I got a no-frills Nokia mobile with a BIG font size. Can one enlarge the font in iPhone's SMS?

Honestly this is the only feature which will make me rush and buy the iPhone... otherwise I'm staying with my (almost) featureless Nokia...

you can use 3rd party SMS apps like iSMS and SMSD. these apps render the fonts a little bit bigger than the default SMS app. HTH.

Just a quick question. Note sure if this was posted earlier or anything but I'll be traveling to France next month. As such, I'm thinking of getting an Orange-unlocked iPhone. What feedback have you heard about using this phone here in the Philippines? What are the pros and cons?

Thanks!

Quick question on syncing contacts (trust me, i tried the search function already)...

If my MS Outlook is empty then I sync with the contacts in my iPHONE, what will happen:

(a) my contacts will be copied to the MS Outlook Address Book
(b) my contacts will be wiped clean and i'll smash my head into the nearest wall
(c) why just I don't try it and see what happens...
(d) none of the above

Thanks in advance guys....

Sir bong.callejo, it would depend on how you configure MS Outlook. You can opt to have the iPhone's data overwrite those on your desktop/laptop, or vice versa.

BTW, the iPhone will sync contacts and calendar entries only with MS Outlook 2003 or higher.

Hi Yeye, you have a 90% chance of getting a 1.1.2, 10% chance of 1.1.3.

Either way, the only way to unlock both right now is to use a SIM solution like TurboSIM/StealthSiM/SuperSim/etc. You should still be able to use it as a phone. :-)

A lot of people have been PMing me about upgrading to firmware 1.1.3.

Here's my official recommendation.

As of January 27, 2008... if it even makes you a tad bit uncomfortable, DON'T DO IT.
Jailbreak 1.1.3 is admitted by many as still in the experimental stage. A lot of your apps will not work with it today.
You run the risk of bricking your iPhone; the process is still quite convoluted.

If you are however, the daring type, very knowledgable in the iPhone, know how to use SSH, SFTP, playing around with AppSupport Files, then proceed at your own risk. I salute you as you discover ways to make our iPhones even better. :-)

If the above paragraph does not fit you, don't even think about updating. :)
Even Installer recommends only developers update to 1.1.3.

That's my recommendation as of today. I'll let you guys know once the coast is clear and the 1.1.3 jailbreak is as easy as pie.

Enjoy!

Leo

Just downgraded from 1.1.3 to 1.1.2 and in the process of patching DarkCast's appsupport for 1.1.2. Question:

What files do I patch? all of the files in the ZIP file? or only some of them? appsupport files only?

Thanks in advance dudes....

Sir bong.callejo, the zip file sir DarkCast graciously shared contains the following:

1) lockdownd file and YouTube activation files (in the lockdown folder) - you no longer need to copy these as the latest version of the 1.1.2 jailbreak automatically takes care of YouTube activation;

2) MNC MCC files - these allow the iPhone to automatically configure network services (e.g. EDGE APN) whenever you swap sims. These are optional uploads, and should you choose not to copy these files and create symbolic links for these, your sim would still be recognized by the iPhone, albeit without network services configured;

3) patched Springboard - allows use of custom operator logos. It uses the AT&T logo by default. FSO_CARRIER_ATT.png and DEFAULT_CARRIER_ATT.png in /System/Library/CoreServices/Springboard.app need to be changed to customize the operator logo;

4) AppSupport - you need to copy this and thereafter set this as executable in order to make SMS and call functions work; and

5) UIPhoneFormats.plist - formats phone entries in Contacts.

So there. I had to take a look at the zip file on my computer anew to remember. :)

@courtside3: thanks man, because I patched all the files via Winscp, the problem i'm having is that i can't remove the damn AT&T carrier logo off - even MIM doesnt work.

Would you know of a simpler solution rather than going back to 1.1.1 then upgrading again to 1.1.2 and NOT patching the springboard.app file.

Thanks a lot.

What you have now is the patched Springboard.app. You can change it by using Customize. If you want to use MIM, you should have the stock Springboard.app.
