View Full Version : What's the best way to copy friend's itunes list on your iPod??
edward_73 04-14-2004, 03:14 AM hi.. just a simple question... im a new apple user. recently purchased pbook and an ipod so i guess im still not well versed on these gadgets. whats the best way to pick up the itunes list of a friend to your ipod. by the way, having a pbook made a lot of things easier for me. i think im beginning to hate my pc.
freelancer 04-14-2004, 03:53 AM Manually. Turn off automatic update in your iPod preferences and set it to manual transfer.
Um. Some friendly reminders here. We might be treading on thin ice in so far as copyrights and inadvertent piracy is concerned.
Friendly advice lang naman. :P

Lester 04-14-2004, 01:10 PM Well, if he only wanted to copy his friend's iTunes LIST, then I guess there's nothing wrong with that =) then again, that wouldn't make sense, unless he really does just want to copy the list and afterwards acquire the songs himself =)
i need your wisdom here.
since i got my 40GB ipod and ripped all my cd collection in it, i stopped buying cds. my reasoning is 'sayang nmn bec i wont use it anymore once i transferred it in ipod'
instead, whenever i have the chance, just borrow cds from friends and told them that ill just rip and transfer into my ipod.
is this piracy?
peter_ob 04-14-2004, 01:24 PM Yes
vicicasas 04-14-2004, 01:25 PM Simply put, you have a copy of the music that you didn't pay for, so the answer is yes.
Back in the old days of cassettes and mix tapes (yes, I'm THAT old), it didn't seem like such a big deal, since every time I wanted to make a copy, the hiss and noise from the resulting generation loss made me wonder if I shouldn't just go out and buy the darn album. But nowadays, where a digital copy is indistinguishable from the original, it's a whole new ball game.
nyek :o
eventhough i dont get to earn as i keep it for my own use? and my friends are fully aware and give consent to do so?
how about if i rip my brothers CD?
i thought it's piracy only if you make money out of it.

It's still piracy even if you don't make money out of it.
Let's face the reality; a lot of people do it, often and without a thought. It's more a case of I won't tell if you won't. And honestly, who's gonna catch you?
But that still doesn't make it right. At least in the eyes of the law.

Here's one way of getting around it. Give your brother your iPod. Now that he owns it he can then legally rip his CD's. Then you can borrow the iPod back. Theres one catch though. Now you can't rip any of your CDs. :D
freelancer 04-15-2004, 12:05 AM It is a sensitive issue. Sharing music, whether thru cassette or ripped CD has many implications. It all boils down to your intentions. Copyright infringement has so many gray areas.. man when I was doing my research on it, I ran across something called The Fairness in Music Licensing Act of 1998 which dealt with an establishment's right to play music in their store, ex. me playing a CD I bought in my brother's restaurant.
Illegal distribution is a major phrase in music piracy laws. But what is "distribution"? To what amount? When I buy a track from iTMS it supports unlimited CD rips. If you take it from there, that means I'm free to rip "Toxic" for my whole barangay, for a measly price of 99 cents. I gave it for free.. but I distributed..so am I a pirate? But iTMS said I could! It was non-commercial, it was personal, I didn't claim it as my own.. so am I? I wanted to spread the word that is Britney Spears. Maybe that's my problem; no one ever wants MY music. :p
Dude, just don't sell it. There are limits to your right to a purchased product. Stay within them.
yeah ok i got it.
i was in a dilemma bec i had the impression that you guys are strict about piracy. thanks adel and freelancer for giving a more realistic viwes as opposed to answers as simple as 'yes, it's piracy' and or ' dont steal music'. it's kinda broad.
thanks guys!
bomalabs 04-15-2004, 10:56 PM i have an independent record company ( mainly distribution) called n/a records (www.narecords.com - undergoing rehabilitation) ( cynthia alexander, sheila and the insects, makiling ensemble, grey sky sessions, mon david, lynn sherman, binky lampano and a host of other fantastic talents). i am also the manager of noel cabangon. the amount of work these guys put into composing, arranging music and performing their music is awesome. everytime we buy a pirated piece of music, be it one cut or a whole cd we steal from them. we take from their work, which more often than not their sole source of income. i don't mean to sound too preachy here, just want to give an artist's perspective. i'm grateful to the others who posted in defense of the artist. I know how easy it is is to grab hold of a pirated copy of someone else's work. But I won't be a hypocrite about this issue. When I do feel the urge to be naughty, I sneak out to virra mall and get myself a foreign artist's cd. Never a local artists piece of art. Never. We gotta protect our own. No one else will.

Hey, bomalabs, didn't you once guest on my radio show, Twisted, with Jessica Zafra, several years ago, on an FM station I used to run (103.5 K-Lite)?
I remember because we talked about this, and you even left some CDs from your label for me to listen to. Binky and Lynn eventually guested on the show, I think, and we played some of Cynthia's stuff, and also some of Shiela and The Insects.
bomalabs 04-16-2004, 08:43 PM yes adel i remember that day. we were promoting rayyn's album, and i think the other guest was lara sia the girl who teaches self- defence to women. i recently bumped into her recently at a knife trade show. knife collecting is another hobby of mine.
what station are you running now? you are as gracious as ever, sir. nice hearing from you. of all places to meet up again. great, isn't it?
jz put up that mag but i think it folded. she wanted me to write about bizaare websites for the mag but i think she got spooked cause she feared my court case against pldt might drive away advertising from the telco. btw, i won the case. pldt.com rules! haha great to find someone i know in these here parts. if i can help philmug in any way, please let me know. be glad to...

Wow, Gerry, you remember! Was that, what, five, six years ago? I've seen you participate in the mailing list, and was following your case in the papers. Congratulations are in order. But we here in PhilMUG are in a similar case, although the shoe is on the other foot this time. But I'm confident for us because the circumstances are crystal clear and unimpeachable. But that's an unpleasant matter I'm not looking forward to.
I'm radio-free now, aside from Twisted, which is on forced hiatus on NU107 for the moment. I was working with Jessica in Flip as a columnist and their IT Editor. I'm a freelance journalist now, a paid hack. But I'm still plugging away at a new book.
We'll take you up on that offer of help someday, sir. But for now, enjoy the new site. Hope to see you at the PhilMUG Anniversary Party!
jasondv 04-17-2004, 12:45 AM Sorry to but* in and bring this thread further off-topic, but I wanted to also say hi to Gerry (even if I'm not that sure he would remember me). Hi Gerry!
bomalabs 04-17-2004, 10:25 PM adel after four and 1/2 years of litigation i'm familiar with how things go in a court. if youre in a situation like that and think i can ask my lawyers to answer some legal questions if you need help. just me know.
jason is that you from mapalad? apologies if im wrong. old age, you see. if im not, i remember putting links to your club on my website! man even if it wasnt mapalad i remember you. just cant pinpoint exactly where from. great to know am among friends here in philmug.
I started the OT posting, I'm afraid. My apologies to all. But hey, this is so cool.
