This might not be very helpful, but the only program I know of that can do direct Real Media-to-iPod conversion (without need of an intermediate step is a Windows program: the freeware SUPER Video Converter (which can convert virtually any format, and has iPod presets for H.264 or .MP4 encoding): http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html

Update: I found some instructions on macosxhints on how to convert Real Media (.rm) audio and video files into .MP3 and .AVI files that can be converted in Quicktime to iPod ready formats - no need to purchase software (but Real Player must be installed on your Mac). Check it out here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060906153448633

Xilisoft trial versions do abound. You can download them easily. And you get a measly 3 minute conversion. ;) 5 minutes tops!

With all the byte space of a DVD movie, you must expect the conversion to take some time - which is really counter-productive since you can watch it na lang instead of squandering those precious minutes (or hours) converting it.

Unless you are a regular traveller and would prefer to watch it on the go (which sadly drains the battery faster than you would like), it's best to watch those movies on your large screen LCD TVs than on a pocket-sized 3.5" screen ;)
