1. I maybe a little off-topic, but kindly bear with me: just curious, do you guys have any idea what happened to Citilite 88.3 FM and why the format was changed? New owners or same owners? And what happened to the fabulous CD collection of the old format? Were they playing music from CDs or from hard drives? I got really curious because I've been looking for a Tom Grant album with the song "Night Charade" that I've been just hoping and wishing to include in my iPod and iTunes for the longest time and not any of the record bars I checked has it (not even Tower Records, the last time I went there).

2. Anyway, I'm also so frustrated because one summer some 7 to 10 years back, while on vacation, there's this particular mellow song that I know I love so much, and I use to hear it a lot on the radio, but unfortunately--I forgot the melody, the lyrics, the album, the tune, the name of the singer. And now with iPod, I naturally want to have a copy of this song. Darn! Has something like this happened to any of you?

3. One of the apparent favorite wedding songs of all time -- "You and I" -- I can't seem to find who originally sang it, and checking the record bars, I couldn't seem to find a definitive version, an original version or at least a decent version of this song. In some CD compilations that I saw where this song has been included, the rendition is definitely poor in quality. Anyone can tell me more about this song or from where I can look for more information?

4. And the song "Sleepy Shores" -- how do I find out more about this?

Sorry mga friends ha, for these questions.

I was part of the consulting team overseeing CityLite several years ago. Our company bought it from Francis Lumen and his partners for an atrocious sum and we proceeded to run it into the ground. Some people thought they knew how to run a Jazz radio station and bungled it, and sales dipped until a point where it was hemmorhaging money every month. The bosses wanted to reformat it and make it over into something else entirely, completely forgetting that the atrocious sum they paid for the station was because of its equity, name and branding; CityLite was an institution, and it was like paying for a pair of imported classic Levis 501s: it was just a pair of jeans, but the name made it expensive; you coulda just bought another pair just as good for a third the price. They wanted to throw out all that CityLite had achieved and meant all these years, and create a new station - which begs the question, why didn't you go buy a dead station at a bargain basement price of P40M and make that over (like we did with K-Lite)? Why buy something that cost five times as much and just trash it?

They'd been wanting to reformat 88.3 for several years, and a lot of us in the management team opposed it. It was a simple case of mismanagement, and reformatting was the extreme solution - it was like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. But I resigned from the team in 2001, some people who thought differently unfortunately rose to power, and a year later, they got their way - JAM 88.3 FM was born. An end of an era, the death of a radio institution, and the beginning of mindless conformity.

As for the music, CT used to play CDs. The collection is in storage, I believe, and the library of DWCT is a gold mine, a complete jazz radio station playlist, lock, stock and barrel. Buti na lang some people were able to archive most of the good stuff and kept them as MP3s. Wink wink.

I have a copy of Night Charade, by the way.

Just the memory of liking something, but not remembering absolutely anything about it? Nope. It's hard to think of something that exists in a vacuum - it has to have some perspective or reference point, otherwise, it could just be your imagination. But funnily enough, I know exactly what you mean.

Wow. There are a lot of songs with this title. Which one? Offhand I can remember Queen, Rick James and Will Young. The iTunes Music Store has copies of different songs with the same title by Cathy Chemi, Jenn Hartmann, Daniel Rhodes, Celine Dion, EWF, Anderson Council and Michael Monroe. Listen to the clips in iTMS.

Thats the theme from the old TV series Owen MD, is it not?

Actually, the iTunes Music Store can answer your questions faster and more accurately than anyone. And you can even hear a sample of the songs so you can confirm that its what you really want. It reports just one version of "Sleepy Shores" - a latin version, by Raul Di Blasio called Playas Somnolientas. You can go to iTMS and listen to a clip. Richard Clayderman even has a version of it.

Adel, thanks for the time in answering my questions. Very enlightening. I have a confession to make--there was a point in the not-so-distant-past that I fantasized photographing the DJs of CityLite. The reason? CitiLite used to have a website with photos of the DJs that could have been better. To my mind, and in my imagination, the DJs should look like the jazz artists--cool guys and gals.

I will check out the versions you mentioned in iTunes. The wedding song "You & I" starts with something like: "You & I will travel far together ... hmmmmmm".

As for not remembering the song, it's such a strange experience. And quite unfortunately, I seriously doubt if I will get to hear that song ever again on the radio any time soon. So sad, so very sad. It's probably like a gem that a writer has written, and it got lost somehow, and so hard to reconstruct. Bad analogy I know, but something like that.

Thanks again Chairman Adel!

No prob. Would have been nice if you photographed the jocks. Most of them are friends of mine, and I know they look better in person. You should have photographed my jocks in KLite when I was still there.

I've been to your studio in West Ave, but we've never met. I was there earlier this year with Bea Alonso and John Lloyd Cruz, who were posing for a cover of something - some woman's magazine - Woman's Journal? I love the shots that line the walls of your studio, by the way.

As for your song, I know it, but the title escapes me for the moment; its on the tip of my tongue. I can even sing most of it. I know my girlfriend knows the title of the song for sure (she used to be a DJ for WRR) but she's asleep already. I'll ask her tomorrow. I think even The Carpenters have a version of it.

I remember that photo shoot of Bea and John. Wish I met you then--you should have come up to the 3rd floor studio. Vic Icasas and some other PhilMUG members have visited one time or another. And since we're "neighbors," feel free to drop by if you're in the area. Glad you like the digital photos on exhibit at the time of your visit. We put up new set of thematic photos every once in a while. On photo shoots, I don't use CDs anymore--I now use the iPod attached to the Altec Lansing speakers. The smart playlists are incredible!

I didn't know The Carpenters has a version of this song. I think it's awesome! The version I found in iTMS is by Cathy Chemi.

Incidentally, do you guys "collect" different versions of the same song? Was there ever a CD released with one song but interpreted in different versions by different artists?

Today, I tried my darnest best in remembering that mellow song I so loved, and still, I couldn't remember. So sad. I heard that remembering can be aided by thinking of things that connect to the lost memory. I'll try again tomorrow. :(

i certainly do! i have eight versions of "once upon a summertime," five versions of "sabor a mi," five of "la vie en rose," four versions of "and we were lovers" (the theme from "the sand pebbles"), eight of "i'll never say goodbye," three of "mack the knife," four of "my foolish heart," etc. (i can just imagine some of our 20-somethings go "huh? what songs are those?" :) )

Hmmmm...I do have several versions of "The Way You Look Tonight"--Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr., Michael Buble, Phil Collins, Steve Tyrell, & Tony Bennett.

For OPM, I have the original Nonoy Zuniga version of "Never Ever Say Goodbye", the Martin Nievera version, the Nonoy & Martin duet version, & the Regine Velasquez version.

and here's confirmation from www.petulaclark.net:

Between "Color My World" and "You and I" from her film Goodbye Mr. Chips, the English lady discussed the movie, which she said was "revolutionary - it had no sex or violence."

(she starred in that movie with peter o'toole.)

as for "sleepy shores," it was an instrumental, played by johnny pearson and many others, used for the opening credits for a 1979/1980 TV detective/doctor series, “owen, md”). you might even find the lyrics on google :)

penmanila, wow, i am so wonderfully surprised to learn of a "petula clark version of "you and i". i'll look around if there's a copy of this from the music bars, and if not, i hope you wouldn't mind too much if i listen to your copy? one of these days :)

one of the songs that i am collecting different versions of, other than "you and i" is "my funny valentines". i think one of the most interesting versions is the one from the movie "the fabulous baker boys". i saw a cd soundtrack of that movie eons ago, but i'm not sure if the song is in that cd. another interesting version would have to be from a demi moore movie the title of which i forgot. can anyone recall?

i used to have a copy of "sleepy shores" a long time ago but it was on casette tape.

"i'll be forever for you" -- sung by a male, played at joey 92.3 fm last night, and goes something like: "we have seen the pages burning ... thru the restless hands of time ... cause no matter where we are .... i'll be forever for you". is the title "i'll be forever for you" or just "forever for you"? and who is the male singer, and from which album?

there was another song played before that, by a female singer this time, and it must have something to do with africa or something. one of the lines go: "someday we'll all be free ..."

penmanila, thanks for the petula clark link. it's fabulous!

arel, the versions you have of the 2 songs sounds so amazingly interesting!!!! i hope i'd get a chance to listen to the different versions too.

ipod and itunes are certainly rejuvinating my interest in music. and i think it's wonderful!

a friend once gave my wife and me a tape (this was back in pre-CD days) of about eight different versions of "my funny valentine."

i have just two versions now in my itunes--by judy collins (!) and barbra streisand, but i'm sure there's a whole lot more out there--maybe i'll go find them.

as for "forever for you", there was a song of that title by hall and oates, and it did mention the "hands of time" but not, i think, "the pages burning." must be a cover version.

Hi Dominique! (how's your Pat Metheny Group collection going?):

That would be "Forever For You" by Deodato. The old CTLite would always play this song. I miss 88.3...:(

I miss CityLite myself, especially when Francis Lumen was at the helm!

We worked extensively w/ him & his group, w/c included his lovely wife, Mary Ann, when they brought in some of the major concert acts of the 1990s, regardless of genre--from Kenny G. to Janet Jackson to Frank Sinatra, etc.

Front-row seating! Haaaay! Those were the days! So far away in the rearview mirror now. :(

I've been trying to compile a collection of "I Will Survive". However, it does not strictly include versions of the exact "I Will Survive" song. It also includes "pseudo versions" just to break the monotony. As an example: Parokya Ni Edgar's "Picha Pie" and Robbie Williams' "Supreme".:)

Since you've mentioned Deodato, anyone here still has a copy of his "Love Island" album? Tahiti Hut, A Train, Love Island etc. are my favorite. I think it wasn't released on CD but I can always rip and burn. Or maybe somone already did make MP3 copies of it. :)

Dominique, you might find Dianne Reeves' cover of "My Funny Valentine" interesting.

hacsaw: i wrote a memo to self, and this is a growing list of the different songs you guys have been suggesting, and i added the dianne reeves' cover of "my funny valentines". thanks for the info. i can't wait to bring this list to the record bars when i do the rounds at the soonest time i'm free.

bagwis: i just added pat metheney's "one quiet night" album, and it's so exquisite. personally, i think this album has been created for "making out". plus, i added a couple of singles since last.

dude_funk: i'd sooo love to listen to the versions of "the anthem" of the song "i will survive" that you already have. more cover and dance versions come out every year from theme club/dance albums. this reminds me of other iconic sounds created by iconic performers the likes of cher, madonna, eartha kitt, grace jones, aretha franklin, village people, diana ross, donna summer, dionne warwick, mariah carey, michael jackson, the queen, simply red, et al. oh my, oh my, oh my--putting all these fabulous names in one sentence leaves me totally breathless!

arel: i noted in my growing list the cover versions of "the way you look tonight". thanks for this gem of an info. whose version was it from the movie "my bestfriend's wedding" in the scene where the boat was passing under the bridge?

penmanila: i will certainly look out for the judy collins and barbra streisand versions of "my funny valentine"! how in the world can i miss that!

dbagziq, arel, bagwis: i miss citilite's acid jazz program and the audiophile program.

you guys are awesome!!!! you are all so cool ... and you guys make my day! thanks to all ....

I too miss CityLite. Even if I couldn't stand those times they played Kenny G, it really was the only station I would listed to while driving. Thank god I have an iPod connected to my car, I don't listen to the radio anymore.

BTW, Dominique, you say you missed their acid jazz show? Funny you mention this. Once upon a time, we block-timed the Friday 11 p.m. to 12 m.n. slot. We produced a canned show called Zen and the Art of Japanese Acid Jazz. We played nothing but Japanese artists (from U.F.O to Mondo Grosso to Monday Michiru). Really cool stuff. After that, the closest program they had to it was the Groove Garden, with music supplied by Anton Ramos. That was a mix of chill out and acid jazz though.

And that song "You and I", man, that brings back memories of DWTL (Ateneo batch July 1985 myself). Any Days members here?

elbertc, it was the "groove garden" that i must have been listening to. i'm not sure though if i was able to catch the zen program. could not recall that i did, but it must sound interesting. i got a cd with original japanese jazz recordings, and i find it to be so good.

It goes...here we are..now and forever..its you and i...

Hey, dominiquejames. I bought it in the States last April, though I haven't tried looking for it in the local stores. It should be available on Amazon. :)

have you heard sarah vaughans' "My Funny Valentine"? great great great!!!!

I heard about that Stevie Wonder compilation album, hmmmm can't wait to get my paws on those. I wonder (no pun intended) who sang Golden Lady and Ribbon in the Sky (if they are there)....

HAHAHAHA Naging DWTL thread bigla!

Batch 109. Ateneo HS.

Speaking of "My Funny Valentine", my favorite instrumental version is by Gerry Mulligan (Starbucks - West Coast Jazz) and my favorite vocal version is from Chet Baker (The Best of Chet Baker). The Chet Baker version is haunting, di funny at all, to the point na my friend said it sounded scary :P OK din yung Sammy Davis but it has too much vocal acrobatics... doesn't fit my taste.

pipoyg, why were you scared listening to "you and i"? i kinda don't get it.

In DWTL, we do several activities that somewhat prepares the candidates to become more :)"receptive" :) to the key learnings of the process that they will be undergoing.

During those days, I was still attempting to project myself as a tough cookie. Hence, a significant amount of intimidation was put into play to soften me a bit:D Mind you, it wasn't anything physical but more psychological.

"You and I" and another Carpenters song, "Day by Day" were the songs regularly used during these events. :D

In the end, though, I learned a lot and everything was back to happy, happy, joy, joy.

PS.

What you just read was the parentally controlled, net friendly and somewhat technical & aloof explanation of what really happened......haha.:D Dominiquejames, I'll be glad to tell you all the funny stories if we ever get to meet in person. I'm sure the others have their own versions as well.

With the song "You And I", it would somehow really be connected to Days...;)

@freeformula: Aside from CTlite 88.3, this one, I really miss too.

pipoyg, somehow, i had the feeling that your post was the sanitized and abbreviated version of the story/stories. i've got insatiable curiosity of lots of things, and you better tell me all about these when we meet. :)

Another great cover of My Fanny Valentine is from Herb Alpert. Its in his "Second Wind" album/CD.

BoyG, Sarah Vaughn would make almost any song sound great just like the late great Ella Fitzgerald. Am sure you've heard her Beatles collection album. That is one excellent collection. Especially her cover of "Fool on the Hill" and "Something" with the legendary Toots Thielemans doing the harmonica.

last night, i added the "eartha kitt in person @ the plaza" album to my itunes and ipod. this is the album that contains her famous rendition of impersonator-friendly "waray waray." she sounds as good as ever! it's quite a rediscovery--the music i used to love to listen to, and i am flooded with happy memories all over again--specially of earnest santiago's coco banana days and the famous paper dolls. hayyy! i wonder where the horse sculptures are now?

have you loaded any new "rediscovery" music to your ipod and itunes lately?

dominiquejames, highlight your iPod on the Source window, then click on the iPod icon that's on the bottom right. That should bring up the iPod Preferences window. Then click on "Manually manage songs and playlists."

In one of my playlist's ella's rendition of bewitched.. is followed by Let's Call The Whole Thing Off (Ella and Louis A. duet) :)

wpalomine....yup also have that...:D
since we're in the genre.....
the best contemporary "standard" album I've had so far has got to be Bobby Caldwell's Blue Condition...his tribute to Frank Sinatra. Scary thing is, he sounds like him in some songs too..haha. His "You Go To My Head" and "Street of Dreams" are my faves as well as his own song "Stuck on You" which has that "old" song feel.

wpalomine: your taste in music is fabulous!

boyg: can you share a couple of lines from the song "stuck on you"?

freelancer, now i know why i missed that icon--it appears only when the ipod is connected, and disappears when the ipod is removed from the cradle.

boyg, the name of the song "stuck on you" (though i'm not sure what the lyrics is or how it goes) kinda reminds me of this one song i once forgot and couldn't remember, and wanted to listen to all over again. you know, something like on the tip of my tongue --- hahahaha! one of these days, i'm going to remember that song.

One of my fave too BoyG specially his version of "Smile". I have been collecting "standards" as well from different artists you'd unlikely expect to do. I got one of Ricky Lee Jones' "Pop" album where she covered "Bye Bye Blackbird", "Second Time Around", "Hi Lilly", "My One and Only Love" and "I'll Be Seeing You". Very cool! :)

ehem....here goes.....hehe

"...lately i've noticed, my world's upside down
and everything's coming unglued,
like crossing the dateline, i'm all turned round,
just don't know what to do.......

..all day long, ive been reflecting..
the things i have to do, what people are expecting,
everything's scattered, baby i'm stuck on you....."

something like that.....

Guys, check out Paul Brown's instrumental version of "My Funny Valentine". It's available in the ITunes music store. Of course, "Don't Let Me be Lonely Tonight" is also a winner. Tried to look for it in the local music stores but so far still out of luck. The album was released Feb. 24 of this year.

Just a tip: When in the iTunes Music Store, you can control click a particular track, then an option to "Copy iTunes Music Store URL" will appear. You can then paste the URL here to make it easy for others to find and listen to the song. Like this. yagballs, that's a cool tip.

i'm fascinated at a section of tower records where they have "pre-owned cds". what does this actually mean?

It's just so...ahhhhhh....

And Mr. Dominique? Simply put, "pre-owned CDs" mean that they are not "virgins" anymore...heh!:P Gamit na!

Cheers!
