The new Beastie Boys CD installs a DRM (http://msl1.mit.edu/furdlog/index.php?p=2099) (Digital Rights Management) code into unsuspecting systems. Beastie fanboys are rightfully up in arms. (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/index.php?)

Copy-protected CDs suck. Some copy protection schemes are so whacked that the resulting discs don't even follow the Red Book standard and are not allowed to use the CD-Digital Audio logo.

The Beastie Boys are not to blame though. It's the recording company that has the final say on such issues. The sad thing is that I've been seeing more and more copy-protected audio discs being sold locally and nobody seems to notice. I just hope this issue will come up one of these days, especially now that more people are buying iPods, etc.

But then again, it's fairly easy to circumvent most copy protection schemes. :-)

:(

My Hail to the Thief CD is also "Copy Controlled" and the resulting ripped AAC files have noticeable buzzing sound in the intro of at least three songs (I don't know if that is a result of their DRM scheme). The weird thing is Bamboo's new album has the same copy control scheme but I never had that problem...

That's it, I'm not going to buy CDs anymore... I can live without new music, but they can't live without us buying their products... let's see who starves first!

Muahahaha!!!~

DRMs highlight the hideous short-sightedness of the music industy in looking for solutions (..er, opportunities) given the file-sharing environment. ah well, am with you there, cutiepanda.. no CDs for me for quite some time. Just rely on our good ol iPods.:)

There are other ways for the music biz to handle the situation, check out this link from techdirt.com & NYTime-- apologies, i digress:

That's it. You try each and everyday to live your life as a good member of society and you hear fellow music lovers suffering from this kind of c&@p.
:)

It is already common knowledge that the music industry is already suffering from lack of sales.

There's A, B, C, and D income brackets of the population.

Forget about C. These are usually the ones who buy those CDs on sidewalks. Those in D doesn't give a s#!t about CDs. They have more important things on their minds like where to get their next meal.

You're left with the smaller A and B markets. This is the market that usually has the money to spend on Wintels, Macs, iPods, Nomads, and yes, original CDs.

What does the music industry do? They p!&$ them off by ruining their computer.

We're the remaining market patronizing their "luxury goods" and this is the thanks we get.

The true large segment of the population that buys pirated CDs will not be affected by this. It will just further alienate more of the remaining market share. What will they think of next? A CD that will spontaneously combust when it detects a Combo Drive?

If they're gonna implement some form of digital music rights management, the least they could do is not have it do harm on your equipment.
