Anyone heard or seen the news about PAL being strict with gadgets for flights bound to the US? I believe that's what I heard earlier in TV Patrol but was not able to watch the full details.

I flew PAL to LAX a few days ago and noticed no special precautions or restrictions with gadgets (and I bring tons of them).

Well all I know from the horse's mouth i.e. PAL, is that all electronic gadgets bigger than the iPads and tablets should be checked in, all others can be handcarried provided they are declared and screened...now how the people at the counters and security checkpoints at different destinations interpret that is another thing...

To be safe, I only bring my ONLY smartphone on board plus one power bank, a pair of headphones, and charger...no tablets, no laptops, no Mac Pros (the last one is a shout out to the dude in La Guardia Intl who wrapped one in shrink wrap and toted it until final checkpoint only to be told no-no)

if you've always wondered what comic-con looks like, check out my flickr album here:

more pics after sunday, when we return for the last day of the convention.

can't get luckier than this--for the second year in a row, our daughter was able to pull up special registration codes for us at the last minute (comic-con sets some aside for corporate partners)--we still pay (with a senior discount), but these codes are golden ;)

and just as cool as comic-con was a real-life trip to a star-wars kind of ship--the US navy's brand-new (6-week-old) combat ship USS gabrielle giffords, docked for the weekend in san diego. note the trimaran design and the stealth-like profile.

note how nearly every inner surface on this ship is covered in a fire-retardant material that's rated to melt at an even higher point than the metal it protects:

too bad we couldn't take pics on the super high-tech bridge! :)

If anyone's going to the US soon, I'll have 2 activated SIM cards with about 2 gigs of 4g data good for two more weeks until Aug 12. I'd be happy to give them to you for free if you can pick them up from me in UP anytime after August 1. They can be reloaded for further use beyond Aug. 12.

Has anybody rented a car in the US with an "expired" driver's license card?

I have an "expired" card but a with a renewed LTO O.R. (renewed last Jan-2017).

if the car rental company sees that it's expired, they may not allow you to rent. I dont think they honor that piece of paper evidencing renewal released by LTO in lieu of the ID itself & rightfully so, since there are hardly any security features in that piece of paper, unlike the ID itself. dito lang talaga sa Pilipinas pwede na ang 'pwede na yan'.

You can just go to the LTO where you got your receipt and show them your travel documents and they'll issue you your plastic card on the spot.

Tried it already at LTO Robinsons Galleria and was told that they don't have any license cards available. :(

So I visited LTO East Avenue this afternoon, and I was advised that "since I renew my license in Robinson's Galleria, I have to wait for the new machines and card materials for them to issue me a license card. And there's nothing else they can do..." No definite timeline. This is inspite of showing them my air ticket and hotel confirmations. The only option given was to secure a license certification.

I'm now verifying with National if the certification can be used for them to rent me a car. I'll keep you posted.
