mm...more likely driver problem or plug problem (have you tried degreasing them with a contact cleaner?).. Earpads don't cause drastic changes.

I thought so too, but both checked out OK. My guess is that since the HD380s are closed over-ears, the pads greatly influences the sound because of the enclosure it creates. Its just like how a room contributes to the sound of a speaker system. This particular set of old pads was in very bad shape because I took too long to order new ones. It went more than two years whereas I usually change it every one. So the sound was probably misbehaving due to the deformed and deteriorating enclosure.

Great sound need not be expensive.

Ever since I got a pair of these Cypherus Audio-modded Sennheiser PX80 ultraportable on-ear headphones (dubbed "The Phoenix") just a few hours ago, I've been grinning ear-to-ear non-stop. They may not be the most reference-sounding pair I've heard to date, but they sure are among the most fun and smooth-sounding. :p

Hey guys, I haven't posted in awhile and just wanted to check which stores carry Audio Technica headphones?

I'm thinking of buying the ATH-A3BT model, hope you can share if you've tried this one out and your thoughts on it. Thanks!

Funny how I keep trying my darndest best to turn back the hands of time by looking for audio gear that, back when I started in the hobby, was considered simply out-of-reach budget-wise (because student days lol).

The latest entry to my 'diary'? Meet the Etymotic Research ER4PT.

Having tried both the new (and supposedly improved) ER4SR/ER4XR, methinks this previous-generation product can still duke out generous heapings of transparency, clarity, and treble extension without losing that much ground to its younger siblings. One can even argue that the ER4PT sounds a tad better than these "new kids in the block" and can easily put to shame not-so-well-implemented multi-BA offerings. :p

To fans of Raul Midon, he never sounded this clear, transparent, and coherent from a portable setup until now. This makes you ask why people are very much caught up (including me, until I found this old yet still a twinkling gem) with the idea that the more drivers an IEM has, it is necessarily a much better product.

i asked fiio about their upcoming btr1 bluetooth headphone amplifier (planned to have aptx) and got this reply:

Hi, please kindly note that the BTC-MMCX has already been upgrade to another project, the Bluetooth receiver BTR1. And it's estimated to be released in a few months. Sorry for keeping you waiting.

so i'll probably just wait for it and see if it will be cheaper than the ak xb10. :)
