^ she's that Me & My Sky lady right? reminds me of a high breed of Ingrid Michaelson, Colbie Caillat, Edie Brickell, Frente and the ipod commercial chick, Yael Naim :)

reese's passion is obvious. kudos to her, and i hope she sticks with it.

but if she wants to level up, it would help to expand her harmonic palette. "a song about space" had a I-V-vi-IV progression, which isn't going to rise above the noise. covering OPM tunes won't help either because indie OPM songwriters are generally folksy, with a similar diatonic blandness. couple that with her "i've heard that voice before" sound, and it'll just be difficult to stand out. then again, with youtube, anybody's got a shot at discovery. not to say that simple songs won't make it; but there are a ton of them. rising above the noise is one thing; sustaining interest is another.

not singling her out; same can be said about many indie singer/songwriters. many start out covering pop songs, which are generally simple/easy to play. the challenge is not to get stuck there. "finding your own voice" usually requires going beyond the basics.

but hey, she's young. i hope she doesn't fence herself in.

^ that's one of the reasons I think why Lady Gaga went the madonna-ish-over-the-top- pop-celebrity route. while still at NYU, her sound was very similar to Tori Amos with a hint of Sara Bareilles. It was clear that she could sing and that she could play the keys.. but if she continued in that path she would have been no different from dozens of other would be indie artists out there. in 2007, LG found her sound with the help of Swedish producer, RedOne. Their collaboration earned them records sales including a couple of Grammys & this made her the star she is today. however, most casual fans think of LG as just any other pop artist; not realizing that there's a ton of talent underneath all that makeup & weird outfits. it's good that her recent performances in the Oscars & Grammys are slowly revealing her as the great musical talent that she is.

agree with a couple of things: partnering with a producer is key! norah jones shot to stardom on the strength of the well-written tune, "don't know why", by jesse harris, and veteran producers like arif mardin. so the likes of reese need to be noticed enough to work with producers who can help her define her sound, or at least give her more exposure, the same way david foster picked up on charice (even if i am not a fan).

agree too on gaga being a bonafide talent. my favorite singers and singer/songwriters are musicians first (usually earned from years of mastering an instrument), singers second. sara barielles, regina spektor, sarah mclaughlan, alicia keys, ingrid michaelson, fiona apple, tori amos, et al. come to mind, in the pop domain. lady gaga is in that rarefied class, and then some.

and then there are my favorites, jazz/blues musicians who happen to sing—oleta adams (soul personified), norah jones, diana krall, harry connick, jr.,

finally (as if i haven't made my point clear enough yet), one of the best songwriters of all, joni mitchell, expanded her harmonic palette, possibly out of necessity. she contracted polio at a young age, so she reconfigured her guitar tuning differently, so her polio-affected fingers could still play the chords she needed. presumably, that altered tuning changed the way she heard things, which must've contributed to her unique sound and sonic conception.

reese is still paying her dues. soon, she'll need to step up. ditto for many young aspiring artists, like hitme's daughter. keep at it!

and don't mind these petty quibbles. keep those discoveries coming. :)

Emily King is back on tour and she looks totally different from the last time I saw her 6 months ago.

No opening act, no band, no backup singers, just pure Emily King music!

    Orianthi!

The labels tried to launch her as a generic pop artist. I'm glad that when you Google her now most of what you see is her shredding.

    With Steve Vai

Wow, Lita Ford! A name I haven't heard in ages… in an era when female rock stars looked like luscious porn celebs!
