Surprise, surprise! Apple quietly releases the new iPad mini!

    • Battery: 19.1 Wh
    • OS: iOS 9
    • Connectivity: 2x2 802.11a/b/g/n/ac + BT 4.1, Lightning, GPS/GNSS (LTE SKU only)

Like the iPad Mini 3, the iPad Mini 4 only got a small amount of time during the keynote. Apple described it as a mini iPad Air 2, is true in most ways but not in all of them. The thickness has been reduced to 6.1mm, and the mass reduced to 298.8 grams for the WiFi model and 304 grams for the LTE model. It still has a 7.85" 2048x1536 IPS display, and based on a look at Apple's event it no longer appears to have a reduced color gamut. It also receives the 8MP iSight camera from the Air 2 with an F/2.4 aperture and 1.12 micron pixels.

While all of these attributes are what you'd expect from a small iPad Air 2, the one difference is that the iPad Mini 4 does not use Apple's A8X SoC. This is a noticable downgrade from A8X in both CPU and especially GPU performance. That isn't to say that A8 is slow, but it's not quite a small iPad Air 2 in every regard. Because Apple's marketing materials show that the iPad Mini 4 can do split screen multitasking it's almost a given that this is a version of A8 with 2GB of RAM.

I've had my iPad 2 for a long time now. I think it's time for an upgrade.

The iPad Mini 4 looks like the perfect candidate. :D

I still wish they used the A8X of the iPad Air 2 rather than the A8. :(

Same sentiments here. Still good with my iPad Mini 1 but thinking to upgrade to this iPad Mini 4 or an iPad Air 2.

iPad mini 4 Vs. iPad Air 2: Head-To-Head Speed Test Shows New 7.9-inch Tablet Crushed By 2014 Model

The iPad mini 4 was introduced by Apple last Thursday to great promise. "We've taken the power and performance of iPad Air 2, and built it into an even smaller, mini enclosure," said Apple marketing Senior Vice President Phil Schiller. But new research from Ars Technica shows that's not entirely true.

Press documents confirmed the Mini 4 would use an A8 chip instead of an A8X chip as used in the Air 2, but until now it was unclear what difference it would make. It has now been confirmed that the chip inside the Mini 4 runs at 1.5GHz, faster than the 1.4GHz A8 chip inside the iPhone 6 and hitting the same clock speed as the Air 2. The chip is left in the dust by the Air 2, however. This is mainly because the older tablet has three CPU cores instead of two.

Ars Technica used the Geekbench benchmarking tool to compare the devices, which produces a higher score the faster the device. It found that the iPad Mini 4 scored 3,121 on overall multicore performance, far behind the Air 2, which scored 4,542 on the same metric. But even on single core performance, the Mini 4 scored 1,716, compared to the Air 2's score of 1,831. Whether on single core or multi core performance, the Air 2 has the upper hand.

    Apple iPad mini 4 review

Whether the mini iPad (or small tablets in general) will survive alongside phablets like the iPhone 6S Plus and Galaxy Note 5 is an open question. And sure, many Android tablets can accomplish the same core tasks for less money. But none of them can match the overall experience you get with the iPad mini 4. Apple’s $499 64GB model is the right choice for most people, and if you really need connectivity in a pinch, either tether to your smartphone or spend extra for the convenience of built-in LTE. It’s easy to see where the iPad mini can improve next year by adding new features like 3D Touch and perhaps Apple Pencil support. But even without them, this is the best small tablet Apple has ever made. After last year’s disappointment, the iPad mini is redeemed.

I got mine today at the Ashop Glorietta. I am loving it. Although I'm having a hard time finding a screen protector. Any suggestions?
