I have a 2003 Old Power MAC g4 with OSX 10.2 I Am a mac virgin and I have no idea what to do to up this computer. After researching a bit I found out that the maximum OS it can play is a 10.5 leopard. problem is the only Software for sale is here is the 10.6 snow leopard. Where Can I buy a 10.5 here in the Philippines?
you would probably have a Mirrored Drive Doors PowerMac G4. maximum OS is OS X Leopard 10.5.8 maximum RAM is 2GB (4x512mb) - PC2100 or PC2700 DDR SDRAM, depending on model configuration - go for 2GB uses regular IDE PATA 3.5" Desktop HDD & IDE CD/DVD Writer Optical Drive - upgrade to 7200rpm & DVD DL writer optional Airport Card or Airport Extreme Card for wifi, depending on model configuration - use this instead of the USB wifi alternative Mactracker reports 3 models with their own varying configurations: PowerMac G4 Mirrored Drive Doors PowerMac G4 FW800 PowerMac G4 Mirrored Drive Doors 2003 you can buy OS X 10.5 Leopard from old stocks of local Apple retailers, or used from those who upgraded to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. then update to 10.5.8 using software update
I found a friend who has a 10.5 and he is willing to give it to me. Thanks for the info but one more thing... the usb is 1.0 and I kinda like to have more slots that are 2.0. Any suggestions? I'm planning on saving up to buy the allegro USB2.0 Also, Planning to go 2gb ram from the start but what to buy? planning on buying 2 512mbpc-2100 rams. Thank you @macdrive007. Sorry for bombarded questions but i have one more... the memory inside only holds 120gb. That wont do for what I need (I need this mac for Protools 8 and video editing) Can I upgrade the memory to a 1tb? Is that possible?
a USB 2.0 4port card compatible with your PowerMac can be bought cheaply for less than 500 pesos at Gilmore IT Center, at a shop run by a chinese near the elevator at the top floor. no need for allegro. for your airport (extreme?) card needs, ask doods888 as he usually has old PowerMacs & parts in stock. he might also have a USB 2.0 card. make sure you determine which DDR SDRAM you need: PC2100 or PC2700, as these 512mb chips are expensive compared to 1GB DDR2 667 SODIMMs nowadays. find good deals at tipidpc.com. Go for the 2GB maximum, it will make Leopard feel just right with your editing apps. I wouldn't recommend you put a 1TB HDD inside. Instead, use that 120GB HDD as your internal OS/Apps drive (hopefully 7200rpm) then use the Firewire 400 port for an external 1TB data drive.
Western Digital brand, Abacus at Greenhills. Btw, mark_17 may also have an airport (extreme?) card. Let him help you find your exact model configuration & specs.
I just tried installing the leopard but it doesn't work. It let me choose the language but that's it. A pop-up jumps out and tells me it can't install.
hot damn! I cant even update it to 10.2.11! I downloaded it from the apple website and still nothing...
Hey, I have a Power Mac G4 (2001) running on Tiger 10.4. I just turned it on a couple of days ago and it was still working perfectly.
This update is not possible. 10.2 to 10.4 is not an update but an OS X upgrade: OS X VERSIONS 10PublicBeta Kodiak 10.0 Cheetah 10.0.4 maximum update 10.1 Puma 10.1.5 max 10.2 Jaguar 10.2.8 max 10.3 Panther 10.3.9 max 10.4 Tiger 10.4.11 max 10.5 Leopard 10.5.8 max 10.6 Snow Leopard 10.6.8 max 10.7 Lion See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X The OS that would be recommended for your PowerMac is OS X Tiger, you need to have a retail installer for this. Maximum OS for your Mac is OS X Leopard, again you need a separate retail installer. OS X Jaguar is no longer supported. Updates will only install/work if you have the corresponding OS X version installed.
