on my W7 machine, whenever I plug my iphone it will "see" it as a digital camera. I can then browse/copy photos/videos taken from my iphone.

Hey!Plug in your phone, and start Windows Photo Gallery. Go to the File menu and choose import. Choose your iPhone and it will do the rest. They come up in your Pictures directory by default. Just to be clear, iTunes does not do this on Windows.
Besides what mentioned above, you also refer this article about how to transfer or copy my photos from iPhone to PC.
Hope it can do you a favor.

Easiest to use Image Capture, it's simple and it's already included with your Mac.

I use Image Capture and iPhoto to sync my photos. :) Or simply iPhoto only to both import and sync.

If you are using PC, your device will automatically read,

You can go to My computer and look for your device, you will see all the photos and you can copy to your hard drive.

My MBA can't seem to detect my phone when I use Preview to import photos. This didn't happen before.

"Import from" is just blank. Has this happened to anyone?

    --------

Fixed! Became automatic after I downloaded ML. :)

I use Dropbox on my iPhone 4S and PC. The auto upload copies every photo to my computer everytime I run the iOS app.

On Windows:Go to your my computer since your iOS device will be detected as a camera then go to the DCMI folder then you should be able to see your photos.

On Mac: Activate your iCloud account and your photos will be transferred to your iPhoto or you can connect your device and then open iPhoto then copy the photos from there.
