Honda is the first japanese car brand in the Philippines to offer built-in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

I visited Honda Alabang & Makati to test if it works on an iPhone 6S with iOS 9 and Google Nexus 6P with Android 6 "Marshmallow".

In the Philippines Apple CarPlay using an iPhone 6S with iOS 9 works without installing any additional app.

When connecting an Android smartphone the stereo of the Honda Civic displayed an error message about Android Auto. My Android smartphone did not notify me that I needed to download the Android Auto app. Android Auto app is not being offered on the PH Google Play store.

Edit: I found and was able to install the apk of Android Auto at http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/android-auto/. I picked arm64 as it was works with my Nexus 6P. Will test Android Auto tomorrow at Honda.

On the new Honda Civic there are two USB ports. The USB in the center armrest does not allow for Apple CarPlay. The USB port located near floor mat works with it.

I am told that the Honda Accord has the same stereo but there was none on display to verify. Honda City is expected to have a refresh in the coming months with the upgraded stereo as well. The Honda CR-V may see its stereo upgraded in 2017.

Apple CarPlay & Android Auto does not support Waze.

Apple Maps work but its pretty much useless in the Philippines. Google Maps is also absent on CarPlay.

Spotify is on the home screen but that isnt really why you bought a car with CarPlay, is it?

Yesterday I visited Honda Alabang and found out that when I plug in my Google Nexus 6P with Android 6 Marshmallow did not work.

Later did I find out that I needed to download the Android Auto app from the Google Play Store.

This is in sharp contrast to Apple’s CarPlay that works without needing any app install.

When I tried to download the Android Auto app from the PH Google Play Store I received an error that it was not available in the Philippines.

So I had to download the app from http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/android-auto/

Today I drove back to the dealer and tried it. It worked but I could not select whether I wanted it to connect via USB or Bluetooth unlike CarPlay. It always had me connect via Bluetooth.

Voice recognition of Google Voice is superior to that of Apple’s Siri with my accent. Using Google Voice with Google Maps allowed me to plot a course to the International Airport, surrounding motels, the nearest mall and Jolibee.

Google Maps on Android Auto allows for multitouch while I could not get Apple Maps on Carplay to zoom and pan.

Making phone calls are easy using the phone’s default messenger and phone apps. Apps like Viber does not work on either platform.

Spotify Free works on both Carplay and Android Auto although the sound quality of FREE really shows it’s annoyingly FREE.

Waze does not work on Android Auto like on CarPlay. On 21 May 2016 Google promised to bring Waze to Android Auto. Hopefully they implement this before the end of the year.

Check my Facebook album for more photos of Android Auto on Honda.

    • Wish it was 8" wide screen at 1280x720p or 1920x1080p instead of 800x480p

I tweaked my 2015 Mazda 3 screen to display android auto!
I don't know how long this tool has been available for but it has saved me from buying that ridiculous navigation SD card from Mazda.

    https://mazdatweaks.com/

Tweaks include being able to play video files on the screen. Casting your android screen. Changing color themes.

Tweaks are easy and painless to apply if your unit is compatible.

There are bugs though. But I am experiencing this in android o beta.
